Jamaica’s U-17 Boyz Bound For FIFA’s World Finals
Goalscoring hero - Jason Wright
Goalscoring hero - Jason Wright
At the final whistle the spectators, Jamaicans at home and across the globe listening and viewing on the internet erupted into joyous shouts and squeals as the 2-1 win over Honduras signaled that Jamaica’s U-17 Boyz had qualified for the U-17 FIFA World Championships Final.

Expressions of delight at the results are still pouring in.

The match started with the Hondurans defending and the Young Reggae Boyz on the attack. From one such attack Skipper Omar Holness blazed over the crossbar.

For much of the game Jamaica was in complete control. In the 13th minute from a long throw-in on the left, the ball was weakly cleared by the Hondurans and fell invitingly to Jason Wright to bang into the top of the goal from 6 yards out.

In the 20th minute Holness fired to goal from approximately 20 yards but the Honduran ‘keeper did well to hold onto the ball. The half ended with the Young Boyz in possession.

In the first minute of the second half Jason Wright was again on the score sheet as he turned beautifully on an excellent pass from Andre Lewis and left-footed placed the ball across goalkeeper Roberto Lopez into the far corner of the goal.

46th minute, Young Reggae Boyz – 2, Honduras – 0!

When it appeared the Young Boyz were cruising to a comfortable victory, in the 63 minute the Honduran coach made a double change that injected urgency to the Hondurans play. Within a minute the ball was beautifully worked down the Honduran right flank and from a wonderful curling cross the tall Honduran substitute rose magnificently and skillfully turned the ball into the Jamaica goal giving Goalkeeper Odean Clarke absolutely no change at keeping it out.

There then followed a 10 minute period within which the Jamaicans were flustered and in panic mode. The previously vociferous cheering of the supporters died and the Stadium became quiet. However the boys weathered the storm and returned to the attack and created a few more chances.

The referee’s whistle saw the Boyz winners 2 – 1.
