guardian.co.uk, Thursday 17 May 2012 17.51 EDT
The outgoing Barcelona coach, Pep Guardiola, is at the top of Liverpool's list as the club searches for a new manager. Photograph: Juan Ferreras/EPA

Liverpool have wasted little time in the search for Kenny Dalglish's successor by drawing up a wishlist headed by Pep Guardiola and Fabio Capello, and have already approached Roberto Martínez at Wigan Athletic, Swansea City's Brendan Rodgers and André Villas-Boas within 24 hours of bringing the Anfield legend's reign to an end.
Fenway Sports Group, the club's owners, received permission to hold talks with Martínez from the Wigan chairman, Dave Whelan, as their wide-ranging approach to identifying Liverpool's next manager became apparent a day after Dalglish's exit. Unlike Whelan, Swansea have not cleared the way for Rodgers to meet Liverpool as yet but are expected to do so. Villas‑Boas is also in the frame for the Liverpool job but John W Henry and Tom Werner, the principal owner and the chairman at Anfield respectively, intend to assess several candidates as they finalise a shortlist. Martínez, Rodgers and Villas‑Boas are by no means the only coaches under consideration. The ideal candidates are Guardiola and Capello but Liverpool's prospects of landing the outgoing Barcelona coach and former England manager are understood to be remote. Guardiola has previously stated his intention to take a sabbatical from the game following a trophy-laden but draining spell at the Camp Nou, while Capello is keen on the Chelsea job. Borussia Dortmund's Jürgen Klopp and Marseille's Didier Deschamp are also thought to be under consideration.
The Wigan chairman revealed: "When Liverpool sacked Kenny I have to say I thought Liverpool would be knocking on the door, and sure enough they are. I did promise Roberto when a big club comes he will have permission to talk to them and they don't come any bigger than Liverpool. I gave permission and he will be talking to them soon."
Martínez does not have the title-winning experience that forms part of FSG's criteria but he will get the opportunity to convince Liverpool's owners that he can fit into the new management structure they intend to install at Anfield. Whelan said: "We played there [at Liverpool] about two months ago. There's no heart at the club. It's a bit disturbing when you think a club like Liverpool is functioning without a heart. I mentioned that to Roberto and I think there's no heart beating at Liverpool. I think the sooner they get a heart the better. I don't know Roberto's feelings about Liverpool, I think he's going there with an open mind. I would love to keep Roberto, he's a great manager."
Liverpool's managing director, Ian Ayre, claimed the selection of Dalglish's successor represented the most critical in the club's recent history. He also insisted Anfield remains an attraction for the finest managers in the game. FSG are being advised on the process by "highly regarded people within football", according to Ayre, who revealed the next manager must work under a new management structure at Anfield. Damien Comolli's former role as director of football is to be fragmented this summer although the new manager will continue to have an influence on transfers.
Liverpool face a third season outside the Champions League next term and Uefa's financial fair play rules, which requires clubs throughout Europe to break even, come into effect in 2013‑14. The failure to mount a challenge to the top four this season, and FSG's doubts over Dalglish's ability to deliver one next year, cost him his job despite winning the Carling Cup and reaching the FA Cup final.
Asked if Liverpool had made a more important appointment than the one now confronting Henry and Werner, Ayre said: "No. It's absolutely critical that we get it right and we move forward. The Champions League is where the football club has to be. When John and Tom arrived, they said they wanted to win. They mean winning and being in that competition. They want to be winning the league. It won't happen overnight. Nobody is kidding themselves. But you have got to be heading in that direction."
Replacements for Comolli – with his old job to be divided between its administrative, scouting and negotiating functions – Graham Bartlett, the former commercial director, and the head of communications Ian Cotton are expected in the next fortnight. The managerial search, said Ayre, who recently had his contract extended at Liverpool, is based "on a whole range of things, from experience and ability, methodology, style of play, character traits. As we've seen in the past it is not just about the football. It is about how controlling some are compared to others. There's a particular process that fits part of the plan we are trying to put together. It has to be a manager who fits in all of that."
Ayre's "controlling" comment would appear to rule out Rafael Benítez from a Liverpool return, the former manager having been given control over all football operations in his final contract.
David Dein, the former vice-chairman of Arsenal, was spotted at several matches with Liverpool officials towards the end of the season but Ayre refused to confirm who is advising Henry and Werner. Villas-Boas, Klopp and Deschamps all meet the criteria of younger title-winning coaches but, having again failed to qualify for the Champions League, and appointed from Fulham (Roy Hodgson) and within (Dalglish) for its last two managers, Ayre denies Liverpool are struggling to entice the most coveted coaches.
Ayre added: "Liverpool still gets everyone excited and interested. We may have lost our way a little in terms of performances but it is still one of the biggest football clubs in the world. It still has a huge fan base. It has also got a good solid business foundation. It has got good owners who are committed. A lot of that doesn't exist in a lot of other football clubs. If you are a manager at that level or you are a manager aspiring to get there, I still think this is one of the biggest jobs in world football.
"I am under no illusion that we can go and find a top-class manager to come to this football club, for all the reasons I have stated. I do not think we are in a situation where the very experienced, very capable, very driven managers who people would want to see here do not want to come."

In memory of disco queen Donna — one of the sanest and smartest singers I ever interviewed — we present Richard Cromelin's Rolling Stone interview with the girl who'd just set the world's dancefloors alight with the 17-minute spectacular 'Love to Love You, Baby'——Barney Hoskyns, Editorial Director, Rock's Backpages
BEVERLY HILLS — The question was: how do you take a recording-studio orgasm on the road?
"I'm sort of eager to find out myself," Donna Summer answered. On the verge of taking her hit single, 'Love to Love You Baby', on a two-and-a-half-month American tour, Summer gave 'Love to Love You' a live trial run at a string of press parties.
"The audience," she said, "was groaning worse than I was."
'Love to Love You Baby', Summer's 17-minute vinyl aphrodisiac filled with rapturous moans, groans, murmurs and yelps, is more than just a Number One record. After Time magazine dubbed it "a marathon of 22 orgasms" and the BBC banned the single, it became a bona fide cause celebre.
"Everyone's asking, 'Were you alone in the studio?'" said the 26-year-old Summer. "Yes, I was alone in the studio. 'Did you touch yourself?' Yes, well, actually I had my hand on my knee. 'Did you fantasize on anything?' Yes, on my handsome boyfriend Peter."
'Love to Love You', Summer's first venture into a disco style, marks the third phase of her career. First, she left her native Boston seven years ago to do Hair in Munich. Then, she began to record in Munich under the direction of Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte.
Last year, Moroder noted that 'Je T'Aime, Moi Non Plus', Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg's heavy-breathing 1969 smash, was selling again in England, and Summer jokingly suggested that they do their own "love song." Moroder took her seriously, adapted a chorus she'd written, cut the track and brought her in for the fateful vocal session.
If Summer had had a hard time singing 'Love to Love You' (only when Moroder cleared the studio and dimmed the lights did she finally capture the voluptuous feel she was after), listening to the thing presented an even stiffer test.
"I didn't want to hear it," she said. "I heard a couple of oohs and aahs once and I — black people don't get red — I was blue! I love the music, I just wished that I hadn't sung it. But it doesn't bother me anymore."
Summer can laugh at the controversy ("If I'd known seven years ago that all I had to do was groan, I would have been groaning!") but her artist's lament is serious: "I have so much more to offer." Her U.S. tour should give her the chance to prove that she's something more than the Linda Lovelace of pop music.
"You can only be trapped by something that's stronger than yourself," she observed, "and I don't consider it to be stronger than myself. I don't intend to let an image make me."
At her first live performance, though, Summer seemed to wallow in the image. Amid flashing gold lights on the percussion and keyboard stands, she approached the microphone borne on the shoulders of two men in loincloths. Dressed in a white dress trimmed with gold and a sparkling gold headdress, she sang her intro numbers with her knees bent and her head thrown back, undulating her crotch in a circular motion at the audience.
Finally, she left the stage while Smoke, a Casablanca horn-rock band, did a transitional number and the lights went out. When they came back on, there were smoke bombs billowing and three modern dance couples engaged in simulated humping. As Donna returned to sing 'Love to Love You', the couples assumed a variety of Kama Sutra positions. At one point, three men lay supine in a row while Donna squatted over each of them. It looked as if she'd been trapped by something stronger than herself.

If a sporting event takes place, but ESPN SportsCenter does not see it, did the event really happen?
That is a philosophical conundrum many US Olympians find themselves pondering as they wait for their fortnight in the spotlight to come around again.
Their apparent invisibility was a topic that kept coming up at Team USA's "media summit" in Dallas this week.
Swimmer Jessica Hardy described it best when she told me "most Americans think we only race once every four years, which is frustrating given how hard we work".
But nowhere is that frustration more keenly felt that within the mighty US athletics team.

“
I wouldn't say it's dying but it's always been one of the smaller sports
”
Sanya Richards-Ross
At least the swimmers can lay claim to the undisputed daddy of the US Olympic scene, Michael Phelps. And it is not as if swimming gets huge coverage anywhere else in the world, apart from Australia perhaps.
But athletics, or track and field, does get media attention elsewhere. It is also quick to remind every other sport that it is the most important, popular and purest of the Olympic disciplines.
So why is it so hard to find any athletics news in the world's athletics superpower?
The day before Allyson Felix arrived in Texas for a marathon of interviews and photo shoots, she had recorded the fastest 100m of the season in Qatar, beating the reigning Olympic champions at 100m and 200m in the process.
Worth a story, you might have thought, particularly when you consider that Felix's compatriot Justin Gatlin - a double Olympic champion - had done the same thing in the men's race.
But when the eight-time world champion took the stage with seven other track and field stars at the Dallas summit, it seemed as if it was up to her to break the news as well.
This is probably what prompted 400m hurdles world champion Lashinda Demus to provide the most memorable soundbite of the entire gathering.
"When we get on the track we know we are taking part in a dying sport," she said to the visible alarm of every listening employee of the sport's governing body USA Track and Field (USATF).
But with the "dying sport" cat out of the bag and running free, Demus's team-mates were asked for their views on the matter when eight media "huddles" formed after the main press conference.
Wallace Spearmon, another world champion and 200m specialist, clearly did not get the urgent USATF memo because he picked up where Demus left off, explaining how whole tiers of American track and field athletes were giving up, unable to make it pay, or even get the meets.
The dust had settled somewhat, however, by the time I got a chance to put this to Sanya Richards-Ross.
Ramnaresh Sarwan and Chris Gayle need to be drafted into the team asap, that would help the team to start winning test matches again and winning breeds confidence this would then give young players like Bravo, Barath, Edwards the platform to go out and fulfill their potential. It must be so difficult for these guys to stay focused after losing test match after test match. It is time for the WICB to put West Indies cricket first.

No question about it, this is the election that will be bought by billionaires.

The Obama campaign will be outspent by a sizable amount.

Billionaire won't air Obama-Wright campaign ads

By BETH FOUHY., Associated Press – 3 minutes ago

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The billionaire said to be weighing a proposal to resurrect incendiary comments by President Barack Obama's former pastor shelved the idea Thursday after Obama and Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney denounced the tactic.

An aide to Joe Ricketts, founder of TD Ameritrade, said the proposal to draw the Rev. Jeremiah Wright into the presidential campaign — and the issue of race, by extension — went too far.

The New York Times reported Thursday that Ricketts' Ending Spending Action Fund, a conservative super PAC, was considering a proposal for a $10 million TV ad campaign highlighting Wright's sermons.

The blueprint, titled "The Defeat of Barack Hussein Obama: the Ricketts Plan to End His Spending For Good," was devised by a group of Republican strategists, one of whom confirmed its contents for The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss private working sessions.

Brian Baker, president of the super PAC, said Ricketts was not the author of the 54-page plan. Baker blamed consultants.
Manchester United's quarterly figures have revealed their net debt has risen by £26million with total revenue down 5.8 per cent.
The Glazer family who own United have spent what equates to more than £250,000 a day on a £71m buyback of bonds and on interest payments.
Gross debt has dropped from £484.5m to £423.3m - 12.6 per cent - but the club's cash has fallen from £113m to £25.6m.

Money matters: Manchester United's net debt has risen by £26m
A surge in United's commercial revenues helped soften the blow of a drop in matchday and media income due to the club's failure to progress in the Champions League and FA Cup last season.
The results show that revenues dropped in the three months ending March 31 by £4.4million from 2011, £70.8m compared to £75.2m, but that drop would have been greater had there not been increased sponsorship income of £3.5m.
The commercial deals have helped keep United on track for a significant revenue increase over the course of the whole season - over the nine-month period total revenues were £245.8m compared to £231.6m for the same period a year previously. Wages have also risen by 9.9 per cent compared to 2011.

'This increase largely relates to growth in player remuneration, driven by new player acquisitions and further contractual negotiations together with increased costs and headcount arising from the continued growth in our sponsorship and commercial operations,' says United's quarterly financial report.
The report confirms that the exit from the Champions League in the group stage and from the FA Cup in the fourth round had affected media and matchday revenues for the three-month period.

Swiss miss: Man United lost 2-1 in Basel to crash out of the Champions League
It states: 'Media income has been impacted by our exit from the UCL, thus no Round of 16 match played and our subsequent participation in the UEL [Europa League], for which, despite one extra game, the income per game is lower than for the UCL.
'In addition, we earned lower revenues for the FA Cup in 2011/12 due to our fourth-round exit, compared with reaching the semi-final in 2010/11.'
Over the three-month period, media revenue dropped £3.8m to £16.9m, matchday revenue by £4.1m to £26.6m and commercial revenue rose by £3.5m to £27.3m.
The increase in commercial revenue is due to part to higher income from United's profit share sponsorship agreement with Nike, their new training kit deal with DHL, and other sponsorship deals.

Hibbert
Robert Bailey, Gleaner Writer

Ajani Williams, president of the Jamaica Basketball Association (JaBA), said National Basketball Association (NBA) player Roy Hibbert has asked the administration for a release in order to become eligible to play for the United States at this summer's Olympic Games.

"He (Hibbert's agent) said they were grateful to us for having him playing with our team because he has a shot at playing with Team USA, and so they would like JaBA to release him from the national team," said Williams during an interview with The Gleaner yesterday.

However, there are some compliance issues that have to be worked out with USA Basketball and the world governing body FIBA.

"Our simple response was that we can't just handle this matter from JaBA to the player or from JaBA to the agent, and so on, it has to be from JaBA to the USA Basketball Federation," said Williams.

"The United States Federation would need to write us and state that they want this player, and at that point JaBA can speak directly to the federation and FIBA, based on the player transferring from one national team to another," Williams said.

One of the top centres

The 7ft 2in, 278-pound Hibbert who is currently representing Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference semi-finals in the NBA play-offs, against the Miami Heat, has emerged as one of the top centres in the league this season.

He averaged 12 points and eight rebounds during the regular season.

Hibbert last represented Jamaica in the Centro Basketball Tournament in the Dominican Republic in 2010.

Williams added that his association has invested a lot in Hibbert, and therefore they will be seeking compensation for his release.

"JaBA just can't just release him because there was a cost that goes into getting Roy Hibbert. We paid a lot of money for NBA insurance for him," Williams said.

"We also did a lot of things around him, and so there are going to be several considerations before JaBA releases him," he added.

Williams stated that Hibbert's absence would be a big blow for the national team, which is scheduled to participate in the Central American Basketball Championships next month.

"We would do much better with him, but the good news is that we have a lot of big men like Jerome Jordan, who could have come off the bench behind Roy," he said.
