Jamaica lose Pan-Am gold after US reinstated

Jamaica's women's 4x400m relay team lost the gold medal they had won after the United States, who had been disqualified after crossing the line first, was reinstated on Sunday, as the 15th Pan-American Junior Track and Field Championships ended at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Port of Spain, Trinidad.
The Jamaican team of 400m bronze medallist Jodi-Ann Muir, 400m finalist Amoy Blake, Daniel Dowie and 400m hurdles champion Nikita Tracey that had run 3 minutes 37.65 seconds was originally awarded the gold, but was pushed back to second place after the US's appeal was upheld.
The Americans were originally disqualified after third leg runner Kellie Schueler had momentarily stepped off the track in a heated battle with Jamaica's Dowie, who had earlier in the day won the bronze medal in the 400m hurdles.
The Americans protested on the basis that Schueler had been pushed, which resulted in her leaving the track.
The result meant the Bahamas were relegated to the bronze and Canada, who had originally awarded with bronze, were fourth.
Jamaica's medal tally was readjusted to three gold medals, three silver medals and eight bronze medals for a total of 14, the fourth best performance ever.
Jamaica's best ever medal haul at the meet was 21 medals (nine gold, seven silver and five bronze) in Tampa, Florida in 1999; followed by 17 in Kingston in 1991 (four gold, eight silver and five bronze) and 15 in Barbados in 2003 (one gold, nine silver and five bronze).
The Jamaicans, who are due back today, set two National Junior Records (NJR) in the three-day meet, which got underway on Friday.
Traves Smikle, who set a National Youth Record (61.22m) when he won the bronze at the IAAF World Youth Championships a month ago in Italy with the 1.50kilo discus, extended his record with the 1.75kilo implement to 57.18m, well above the 54.42m he had set in April at the CARIFTA Games.
K'Don Samuels improved his pole vault record by .5m after clearing 5.85m, also for third place.
One hundred metres hurdler Shermaine Williams, 200m runner Nickel Ashmeade and Tracey were individual winners, while Rosemarie Carty in the 100m hurdles, the women's 4x100m relay team and the women's 4x400m team won silver medals.
Jura Levy won two individual bronze medals in the 100m and 200m, as well as Smikle, 400m runner Jodi-Ann Muir, Ramone McKenzie in the 200m, Samuels, the men's 4x100m team and Dowie in the 400m hurdles.
Solidarity is not a matter of well wishing, but is sharing the very same fate whether in victory or in death.
