  • Young Wolmerians shock Sicko favourites

Sicko never gave them a chance in his pre race column but my young 4 x 1 girls teams took the silver behind Long Beach Poly who were flown in from the West Coast to defeat the Jamaicans.

Edwin Allen, Vere shine - Score wins in Championships of Americas relays
Long Beach Poly deny Jamaicans 4X100m title

PHILADELPHIA, USA — Edwin Allen High won the 4x800m in the second fastest time ever and Vere Technical won their first Mile Relay title in 17 years as the Jamaican high school girls won two Championships of Americas relay titles on yesterday's second day of the 117th Penn Relays Carnival at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

The Jamaicans failed to match last year's treble but the quality of yesterday's wins made up for the loss of the 4x100m that went to Long Beach Poly.

Edwin Allen had qualified for all three Championships of Americas finals but had to settle for the 4x800m where the team of Desreen Montaque, Marlena Eubanks, who ran the anchor leg in the heats, Carla Thompson and 400m hurdles record holder Ristananna Tracey ran the second fastest time at the meet, clocking 8 minutes, 39.2 seconds.
The time is second only to the 20-year-old record 8 minutes 37.71 seconds run by Vere Technical in 1991 that was a world junior record at the time.
Long Beach Poly of California were second in 8 minutes 59.72 seconds, while defending champions Holmwood Technical took third in 8:05.32 minutes.
This was Edwin Allen's second win in the event in the last three years and coach Michael Dyke said while he was happy for the win, they were a bit disappointed. "We came to set the record, we knew we could run faster than that time," he told reporters.
He said he was not surprised by the margin of win and ease of win as they were prepared.
Montaque, who led off with a 2:12.22-minute leg, was kept in close check for the first leg by Holmwood and Long Beach Poly, but a strong 2:07.78-minute leg from Eubanks established a 15-metre lead that was never breached as Thompson (2:16.05 minutes) and Tracey (2:03.17 minutes) raced against the clock to the victory.
After a warm day, the temperatures dipped into the low 60s, but the Vere quartet of Yanique McNeil, Olivia James, Shantel Duncan and Shericka Jackson ran 3 minutes 37.79 seconds to beat Holmwood Technical 3:40.33 minutes and Edwin Allen third in 3:40.45 minutes to complete the 1-2-3 for Jamaica.
This was the first win for Vere in the 4x400m since 1994 when they won nine straight and coach Rahnsomn Edwards told the Observer he was not worried about the time.
"At Penn and in this kind of weather, you can't worry about the time, the main thing is the position and we won."
After finishing down the track in the 4x100m earlier, Edwards said the Mile Relay win was "redemption".
Long Beach Poly denied the massive Jamaican contingent in the 4x100m Championships of Americas final, running 45.23 seconds, as Wolmer's Girls' were second in 45.86 seconds and Herbert Morrison Technical were third in 45.91 seconds.
Edwin Allen, who had the fastest time in the heats on Thursday, were a disappointing fifth, followed by Vere Technical and Camperdown High.
Meanwhile, St Jago High and The Queen's won their respective consolation finals.
St Jago ran 47.22 seconds to win the 'Small Schools' race with Alpha Academy third and St Elizabeth Technical fifth.
The Queen's won the 'Large Schools' race in 47.03 seconds.
