The excitement surrounding the Beijing Olympics means many sports-loving Jamaicans may have missed it, or even having seen it failed to contemplate its significance.
In truth though, the reports in newspapers and in the electronic media over recent days of the extraordinary deterioration of the football field at the National Stadium are extremely disturbing.
Technical director of Jamaica's football, Mr Rene Simoes, had become so upset at the situation that he called in reporters and camera crews to bear witness and transmit the message to the Jamaican public. The newspaper image of Assistant Coach Mr Theodore Whitmore juggling a football in a huge hole was graphic enough. The television pictures were even more so.
We are told that the football field has deteriorated to such a state that only a section was usable as Mr Simoes sought to prepare his players for next week's World Cup qualifier against Canada in that country.
