Jamaica wins Caribbean title to claim next-to-last berth in CONCACAF U-20 Championship

1/14/2009 - KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – Jamaica claimed the next-to-last berth in the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship on Tuesday, beating St. Vincent & the Grenadines 2-0 with an early own-goal and an insurance tally by Leaunghn Williams in the second half.

The victory enabled Jamaica to climb past St. Vincent by one point and finish atop the four-team event. St. Vincent finished second with six points and still has a chance to qualify for the CONCACAF finals, facing Honduras in a two-leg playoff for the last berth in the March 6-15 championship in Trinidad & Tobago.

The draw for the CONCACAF U-20 Championship is set for Thursday at the confederation’s headquarters in New York.

St. Vincent’s Justin Stapleton put Jamaica ahead in the 13th minute, scoring into his own net. Williams virtually assured the victory in the 60th minute by putting the Young Boyz ahead by two goals.

Earlier, Haiti made a last push to earn a chance at the playoff with Honduras, beating the Dominican Republic 6-1 with goals by six different players. The margin of victory required Jamaica to beat St. Vincent or face elimination on goal difference.

Haiti finished with four points while the Dominicans lost all three games and were outscored 12-2.

Jamaica’s victory followed and opening 4-1 victory over the Dominican Republic with three goals by Alonzo Adlam on Friday and a 1-1 draw with Haiti on Sunday.
