Andre Clennon off on trials with Portland Timbers

ANDRE Clennon, the Jamaica international who plays for Waterhouse FC, flew out of Jamaica yesterday headed for the United States of America where he will engage in a trial with MLS outfit Portland Timbers, who are based in Oregon.

Waterhouse president Ricky Chin described the move as "positive". Chin said Clennon was invited to the Timbers by head coach Caleb Porter.

Porter, a former midfielder who played college soccer for Indiana University before his short professional career in Major League Soccer and the United Soccer League was ended by persistent knee injuries, is also an American football coach who also doubles as head coach of the United States Under-23 team.

Before moving to his present assignments Porter previously coached Clennon's boyhood playmate Darren Mattocks at the University of Akron, while serving the institution as head coach between the years 2006 and 2012.

On one of his visits to Mattocks while in Jamaica, Porter saw Clennon and thought that the six-foot plus utility player has certain capable attributes that could be an asset to the Timbers, with such natural speed, strength, a shot in either foot and the ability to play in any position in mid-field or on the forward line.

Clennon, 23, was born in Portmore, St Catherine and attended Bridgeport High, along with Mattocks. While at Bridgeport both boys played football in the Schoolboy Manning Cup competition and for Waterhouse at both the junior and senior levels before Mattocks moved on to the University of Akron, and Clennon to Vietnam, where he spent half of a season playing in the Vietnam First Division with Lam Dong. The Vietnam League lasts for eight months, January to August. Clennon was on target three times in his short stay.
