  • My Predictions For JA/NPL

    1. The league will have 12 FRANCHISES, not teams. Teams will drop out only because of financial reasons.

    2. Within the next three years, at least two new teams will emerge, or existing teams will be renamed and compete under a corporate name.

Example: Red Stripe FC, Sandals FC, etc.

    3. A Super League championship WILL NOT guarantee automatic promotion, or a chance to be promoted through a tournament, to the JA/NPL. If the league decides to expand, or openings become available, certain clubs with an excellent record on the pitch and sufficient financial backing will be "invited" to apply.

In my years of following Jamaican soccer, the landscape is littered with teams won the Super League, then crashed with a thud in NPL, the debt burden driving them to ruin. (Invaders and Arlington come to mind)

    4. Instead of a team winning a playoff tournament in June and having only two or three months to assemble players and sufficient financial backing for the NPL, it is possible that a prospective new team be given a longer period of time to get everything in order. For example, a new team may be approved in January to begin play in the 2008-09 season.

The last thing this new league needs is underfunded teams.

I have seen at least two minor league pro hockey leagues crash under the weight of too many underfunded teams. THe league was willing to accept anyone with enough money for a franchise and no clue how to run a team. It is better for the JANPL to have eight solid teams than to have eight solid teams and four shaky teams.

Part of the problem with these underfunded team is vision.

Look at St.Georges United while not rich under Everton King they have been planning for the past 4-5 years. They build a fence around their field that you can't see the games from outside anymore, They have put in some stands(not enough) and build press area. They have always had bathroom facilities. They have some work to do and hopefully the hurricane didn't affect them much. They also have a democratic management structure and most of their original players are community motivated rather than money but the new ones we will have to see...

These clubs need to do more planning rather than just assembly a good set of baller and a don a think that will take them through the NPL season.

I like this putting of your neck out! ...this should be stored in our archives....

      Good going, Bruce!

Currently as appearing in the papers - The following could be asked -
On what basis will those hired to run the 'new entity' be chosen? Jobs advertised? Interviewed by whom? etc? etc?

How do you think profits will be shared? ...and, is ownership really shared? When a team has to relinquish ownership will that ownership be a forced sale at market value? ..or, just forced or agreed 'handover' for J$1.00 or some already stipuilated minimum J$ amount or...is it a to be negotiated subject to no agreement being reached among the parties a right of taking the matter to arbitration and or the courts?

btw - If there are losses - how absorbed? ...who should creditors turn to for redress? ...can creditors force the company/entity into bankruptcy? ..would the directors be liable for outstanding debts and or any action that it is found fiduciary responsibilities were not lived up to? etc...

...and, again what part does the JFF play - oversight..or what?

well those are questions to be asked but give Seaga, Jerdini and their team credit for doing something others only talk about.

Remember last year there was negociations going on for only 6 teams? Well most will see this as an improvement. I hope the players can do their things too and after the next worldcup them nah fi complain say thm no get nothing, instead them can do like the Trini players.

Perhaps this may lead others to create club structures - (...including modifiying and strengthening the existing ones) - that are business-like in structure and professional in actions.

Well the teams should not be new. They should be playing in a new league... Same old teams.
