Frome, Spalding move into Inter-Zone round

BY PAUL A REID Observer writer

MONTEGO BAY — Former champions Frome Technical and Spalding High waltzed into the Inter-Zone round of the schoolboy daCosta Cup competition after extending perfect win streaks yesterday.

Frome secured their place in the Ben Francis KO by topping Zone B with 18 points after blanking Cambridge 4-0 at Frome Sports Club.

Obrian Woodbine continued his hot scoring run, netting twice as Rohan Watson and Linval Wilson Jr also scored. Woodbine’s brace took his tally to nine.

Anchovy kept their slim hope of advancing alive after edging second-placed Rusea’s 1-0 in Lucea. Andres Nickel’s second-half goal kept Rusea’s on 10 points — three more than Anchovy.

A hat-trick from Francois Swaby, boosting his tally to 12 goals, eased Spalding into the next round as they blanked Porus 6-0 in winning for the sixth straight time.

Spalding are on 18 points and can only be surpassed by Holmwood Technical, who were also in a goal-scoring spree, blanking Christiana 8-0.

        Gabbi Francis grabbed a hat-trick for the Dave A n d e r s o n - c o a c h e d Holmwood, who need just a point from their next three games to advance.

Red-hot Grange Hill and former champions Glenmuir continued their unbeaten runs as well and moved to within touching distance of qualifying after wins yesterday.

Captain Janique Thomas scored in the second half as Grange Hill edged Mannings 1-0 at Belle Isle Complex to move to 16 points at the top of Zone C. They need only a point from defending champions Godfrey Stewart on Saturday to confirm their place in the next round.

Petersfield shook off their loss to Grange Hill last week to beat Maude McLeod and move into second place with 10 points.

Glenmuir beat Kemps Hill for the second time as they increased their lead over Garvey Maceo in Zone I on 19 points — five more than Garvey Maceo. Glenmuir need only a point from their remaining three games to take their place in the Inter-Zone round.

Renario Downswell took his goal tally to 15 after scoring a hat-trick in St Elizabeth Technical’s 8-0 rout of Newell.

Black River moved into second place in Zone E with a surprise 1-0 win over Munro College. Lamar McKenzie’s late penalty gave Black River their first win over Munro in years.

Black River are on 16 points — one more than Munro — with both teams playing six matches.

William Knibb tightened their grip on Zone A, smashing Maldon High 5-2 in Trelawny as they raced to 13 points. Cordell Simpson bagged a three-timer, while Ratcliff Hall got two for the Cassman Williams-coached team.

At Jarrett Park, Herbert Morrison gave up a second-half goal to home team St James High and had to settle for a 1-1 draw as they edged into second place with eight points — one more than Cornwall College, who have a game in hand.

Akeil Lee gave Herbert Morrison the lead after 31 minutes with a brilliant solo effort. Dribbling from almost the half-line the

midfielder wove his way through the entire St James team before uncorking a powerful shot into the roof of the goal.

Mario Campbell, who replaced Andrew Brown in the second half, grabbed the equaliser in the 68th minute when he beat goalkeeper Tiano Allen at his near right post.

Meanwhile Clarendon College could become the third team to qualify for the Interzone round today when they take on Edwin Allen for the sceond time in three days.

Clarendon College beat Edwin Allen 3-0 on Tuesday and a win today would give them one of the two places from Zone H.
