  • Jamaican group protest against budget tax package

A group calling itself Campaign For Social and Economic Justice is serving notice that it will be mounting public protests against what it calls the Government’s oppressive tax package.

The warning comes a day before Prime Minister Bruce Golding makes his contribution to the 2009/2010 Budget debate.

When Mr Golding speaks in Parliament tomorrow, he is expected to present further justification for the $18 billion tax package announced by the finance minister on April 23.

The organiser of Campaign For Social and Economic Justice, Lloyd D’Aguilar, said Jamaicans cannot manage more burden.

Mr. D’Aguilar says Jamaicans should reject the budget tabled by the finance minister and claims that even more taxes could be introduced soon.

He’s suggesting that the Government remove what he calls the unproductive consumption from the Budget to pay public sector workers their due increase.

Tomorrow at noon, Campaign For Social and Economic Justice will assemble its members at the southern gate of the National Heroes Park in Kingston.

After the presentations in parliament, they will march along East Street to the vicinity of Gordon House.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
