  • Gov't makes another step towards CCJ

    Daraine Luton, Senior Staff Reporter

The Government has taken a major step toward making the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) Jamaica's final appelate court.

Leader of the House of Representatives Phillip Paulwell today gave notice that at the next sitting of the House Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller would be moving for first reading of three bills related to the establishment of the CCJ.

In order to establish the CCJ, the bill which is proposing to amend the constitution, requires a two-thirds support in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The Government has a two-thirds majority in the House and one less than two-thirds in the Senate.

The Parliamentary opposition has indicated it will only support the CCJ as Jamaica's final appelate court if the matter is put to the country and approved in a referendum.
