  • Jampro pitches medical tourism prospects

Jampro, the marketing arm of the Jamaican Government, is facilitating three medical tourism projects that will mean tens of billions in new investments were they to come to fruition.

The projects, designated for the parishes of Portland, St Andrew, and St James, require financing, the agency said at a webinar it hosted regarding prospects for the subsector.

The global tourism market generates some US$3 trillion a year. Jamaica’s tourism earnings pre-COVID topped US$3 billion annually, but information regarding the flows contributed by medical tourists was not immediately available.

Still, Jampro President Diane Edwards was bullish about the prospects.

“There are things happening in the space,” she said.

An investment opportunity guide done for Jampro by PwC several years ago, which quoted data up to 2017, indicated that medical tourism was around a US$45 billion to US$72 billion business, globally, with the potential to grow 15-25 per cent per annum.

Health training institute to be established in MoBay

    Tuesday, May 18, 2021
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A US$17-million health training institute, which will expand Jamaica's offerings in health tourism and medical education, is to be established in Montego Bay, St James.

Expected to open its doors by the latest June next year, the institute, which will be hosted by the University of the West Indies (UWI), will serve as a satellite campus for the Bioprist Institute of Medical Sciences – an independent subsidiary of the Bioprist Group.

It will be housed within a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) focused on healthcare and wellness, to be dubbed, 'The Grand Ridge Medical City', that will be built, operated and promoted by the Bioprist Group, which is a conglomerate of diversified sectors, primarily in healthcare, related industries and pharmaceuticals.

Dem offer low skill heathcare jobs too?

Seems like a very worthy venture.

Is there any relationship between tourism and technology here?

Holness upbeat as Harmony Beach Park opens

MONTEGO BAY, St James — Coming on the heels of Friday's official opening of the $1.3-billion world-class Harmony Beach Park, transformed from the popular Dump Up Beach in this second city, Prime Minister Andrew Holness has announced the brewing of other major projects for the resort.

“There are other major projects to come,” the prime minister stated. Holnesss cited an oceanarium as one such project in the offing for the city.

An oceanarium is a saltwater aquarium for displaying marine animals and plants, particularly oceanic, pelagic, fishes and mammals. It serves as a centre for public entertainment and education, and scientific study.

He added: “We have lands in Kingston on the waterfront, you will be hearing more about those as well.”

One visit to the Georgia Aquarium and you'd see that technology is involved.......Yes!!! You would have low skilled workers at an aquarium - cleaning (sweeping, mopping, garbage removal, etc.), manning the souvenir & food shops/booths, etc.

Sounds great if it's just not another Indian offshore medical school scam. Look at Guyana and other Caribbean countries with medical schools, the degrees from which are not even worth the paper printed on and using the UWI as a cover to try and gain legitimacy. I think that is what these Indians are trying to do. My opinion. Dont trust them but willing to wait and see.
