Rush on for D'Cup semi-final spots

FALMOUTH, Trelawny - Eight teams enter this afternoon's final round of quarter-finals matches in the daCosta Cup with a chance of reaching the semi-finals.

Group leaders Cornwall College and defending champions Glenmuir are on four points apiece and can advance with draws against Fair Prospect and Munro College, respectively. The other teams, however, must win to sustain their hopes of advancing.

Meanwhile, Rusea's are protesting the 1:00 pm scheduling of their match against Clarendon College at STETHS in the curtain-raiser of a double-header at the venue.

Anthony 'Follies' Williams, a member of the coaching staff of the eight-time champions, told the Observer yesterday that it was unfair for them to play two hours before Munro and Glenmuir meet at the venue, since the result of the first match could determine who advance.

"Suppose our game ends in a tied score?" Williams asks. "All Glenmuir and Munro would have to do is go through the motions and draw...

and both of them gone (through to
    the semi-finals)."

Williams said this scenario would not be permitted anywhere else in the world. However, he conceded all his team needed to do was to win the match.

Rusea's are coming off a 3-0 whipping from Glenmuir last Saturday - their biggest loss of the season - and must regroup to move on.

Clarendon have struggled since the end of the first round, but are seeking their second straight win over Rusea's at this stage after winning 2-0 at that venue last season.
After scoring 46 goals in 12 games in Zone H, Clarendon have found goals hard to come by, scoring just three and conceding six in six games, including one in the Ben Francis KO played since.

Rusea's have had more success in front of goal since the end of the first round, scoring 13 times and conceding nine.
After a hiccup against Clarendon in the first quarter-final game, Glenmuir responded by spanking Rusea's 3-0 on Saturday and should give Munro a torrid time.

Striker Draion McNain should return to the line-up after missing Saturday's game, strengthening Glenmuir's already potent line-up.

At Elliston Wakeland Centre, Cornwall need to guard against overconfidence against Fair Prospect after snapping Garvey Maceo's 18-match unbeaten streak from last season on Saturday.

A draw will be enough to put Cornwall into the semi-finals for the first time since 2002, but coach Dr Dean Weatherly said they would be going all out for a win.

    Today's schedule:
Cornwall College vs Fair Prospect @ Elliston Wakeland 3:00 pm
Manchester vs Garvey Maceo @ Jamalco Sports Club 3:00 pm
Rusea's vs Clarendon College @ STETHS 1:00 pm
Munro College vs Glenmuir @ STETHS 3:00 pm
