Black River, St Elizabeth - Two-time daCosta Cup champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Black River High played to a 0-0 draw in their crucial Zone E clash at Black River here yesterday.
The result left STETHS - with a goal difference in the high teens ahead of Black River with whom they are tied on points - best placed of the two to advance to the Inter Zone round of the rural area competition following Saturday's final round of games.
STETHS will meet Lacovia High, whom they defeated 5-0 in the first round, while Black River will confront bottom-placed Maggotty High, whom they whipped 7-0 in the first round.
Black River will now look to trounce Maggotty by a large double-figure score while hoping that Lacovia find a way to shock a STETHS team that will welcome back dominant midfielder Akiel Williams. The latter missed yesterday's game because of a red-card suspension.
The drawn result at Black River means Munro College now lead the zone with 21 points and with lowly Newell left to face on Saturday, will almost certainly top the group, thereby qualifying for the Ben Francis Cup KO.
Following yesterday's game, STETHS' coach Kurt Brooks regretted not making the KO tournament, but also philosophised that with the daCosta Cup foremost in his mind, "perhaps it's for the best".
