Minutes after his team lost the Ben Francis Knock Out (KO) finals against Frome Technical High on Saturday, Clarendon College’s coach, Kevin “Sensie” Williams, was quoted as saying all was not lost since it was the daCosta Cup on which they really have their eyes.
Hopefully, he was not misquoted by the writer who went on to note that Williams had started the season with hopes of winning all three titles — the Ben Francis KO, the daCosta Cup and the Olivier Shield.
Williams has apparently changed his tune. He was quoted as saying that since the Ben Francis KO is not as “prestigious” as the daCosta Cup, they were hungrier to win the more established title.
Maybe what he really meant was that after Saturday’s loss, it had made them hungrier to win the other two. At least I hope that was what he meant, as his comments came across as a case of sour grapes.
One of Williams’ two assistants, Garfield Robinson, is quoted as saying that since they have not won anything since 1998, they were hungry for any trophy they could get their hands on.
This is not the first time that a Clarendon school has chosen to ignore the KO title while eyeing the daCosta Cup. In 2001, then Glenmuir coach Glendon Hutchinson fielded a second 11 in the Ben Francis KO semi-finals against Cornwall College at Frome and lost 5-1. A few days later, his full strength team lost 1-0 to the same Cornwall team in the daCosta Cup finals at Jarrett Park. In the local parlance, “fuss water hog catch, him wallah”.
Clarendon College must be mindful of their recent history of coming close and going home empty-handed. Just last year, a lot of the players were reduced to tears when they were beaten in the semi-finals on penalty kicks by Godfrey Stewart and saw their hopes go up in smoke.
Going into the semi-finals last year, “experts” were predicting an all-Clarendon daCosta Cup final. In the end, the trophy was copped by a team from Westmoreland. Who knows, this is where it may end up for a second straight season.
There is, however, a long time between now and December 2 when the daCosta Cup finals are to be held and schoolboy football, as we all know, can be very unpredictable.
Make no mistake, the Clarendon College team is a very good one and they will
