    Dirk Kuyt

Kuyt has scored four goals in 17 games for Holland

Liverpool have agreed a fee with Feyenoord for striker Dirk Kuyt.

Kuyt, who was also a target for Newcastle, is to undergo a Reds medical and agree personal terms before sealing a move believed to be worth £10m.

"For me, Liverpool is sure to be the dream club I was looking for," 26-year-old Kuyt told the Reds website.

"There was more interest from abroad, but for me there was nothing of the calibre of Liverpool, a brilliant club with an enormous reputation."

Liverpool's capture of Kuyt ends a summer-long chase for the Dutch international, who was also linked with Tottenham.

Feyenoord were desperate to hold on to the striker, who appeared for Holland at the World Cup, but admitted defeat on Thursday.

"We did everything we could to keep Dirk at Feyenoord," said chairman Jorien van den Herik.

"We went a long way to doing that and Dirk was open to that, but we knew that the chance was he would leave if his dream club came in. Liverpool is his dream club.

"Many clubs have tried to contact Dirk over the recent period, but he's said no to clubs every time.

"That characterises Dirk's attitude: either Feyenoord or my dream club."

This should be completed within 48 hours despite false reports suggesting the player prefers a move to Newcastle. You are probably aware that, of the last 10 winners of the Community Shield, only two have gone on to win the league that season — Chelsea last term and Manchester United a decade ago. Carve it up how you will, then, but statistically speaking, winning the Community Shield is pretty much the equivalent of announcing that you have given up all hope of carrying off the Premiership in the immediate future. This is why many important people within the game believe it would be more in keeping with football’s modern realities if the giant silver salver, routinely presented at the end of the match, were replaced with a towel which the winning team would then formally toss in, under the soberly watchful eye of important FA and Premier League officials and the day’s guest of honour (Geoff Hurst, normally). </SPAN><P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><SPAN lang=EN-GB><o></o></SPAN><P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><SPAN lang=EN-GB>But that little historical anomaly is well known about the Community Shield. Did you know, for instance, that the vast majority of the clubs who have won the Community Shield — or Charity Shield, as it used to be known - have soon afterwards experienced some level of locust infestation in or around their training facilities, serious enough to require detailed and lengthy intervention by properly certificated pest control agencies? </SPAN><P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><SPAN lang=EN-GB><o></o></SPAN><P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><SPAN lang=EN-GB>Moreover, according to private sources, 73 percent of scorers of the winning goal in the Community Shield develop a mild but annoyingly persis

Which must have left poor Roeder rather embarrassed.

Officially it comes down to the price of the player, but was Roeder totally satisfied with what he saw? If he was going to make a move, it had to be straight after the World Cup, because the Dutchman had a poor competition and his price was at rock bottom.

Since then his form has improved, but as Roeder became more impressed by what he saw, the price went through the roof. Liverpool, too, weren't too keen back in June when he was struggling to find form in Germany. And even last week, they seemed well short of 100% commitment to the deal. As for Fat Fred and Roeder, there was even talk that Kuyt was coming back to Tyneside on United's private plane - and some television stations planned to be at Newcastle airport when it landed just before midnight.

But this was never going to be the case, as Liverpool finally made a move and Kuyt insisted Liverpool was his dream move.

Liverpool have taken a risk on him, but with four class strikers already at the club, it is a risk they can afford. Unlike Newcastle, who don't have the financial clout of the Scousers, and the next man they bring in MUST be worth the money.

Is Kuyt worth the money? Who knows. But I'll tell you one thing ... Craig Bellamy is the bargain of the close-season. Mark my words!
