Burton O'Brien made light of Sheffield Wednesday's striker shortage to score the goal to end Plymouth's unbeaten start to the season.

All five forwards on Wednesday's books were injured and unavailable for the long journey to Home Park, but the players on whom the goalscoring responsibility was placed did their team proud.

Wide midfielders Chris Brunt and Wade Small were initially deployed as front men by manager Paul Sturrock, who was returning to his former club.

But the crisis was compounded after just 11 minutes when Small had to go off injured to be replaced by Sean McAllister who only turned 19 this week.

Even though they were the better side in the first half, Wednesday went in at the break trailing to Paul Wotton's 43rd-minute penalty.

However, McAllister equalised early in the second period and O'Brien snatched a surprise winner in the closing stages.

Third in the table before the match after two wins and a draw, Argyle did not look like a team with the potential to challenge for promotion.

And in the first half the Owls' absence of an orthodox marksman was evident as they could not convert the chances they created, Small firing wide before he had to go off and McAllister having an effort blocked by defender Hasney Aljofree when well positioned in the penalty area.

Despite a disappointing opening, the home side still went ahead two minutes before the break.

On-loan Middlesbrough goalkeeper Brad Jones fouled Barry Hayles, earning a booking, and Wotton lashed the spot-kick into the bottom corner of the net.

Wednesday's Glenn Whelan was shown the yellow card for dissent two minutes into the second period but there was soon better news for Sturrock and the travelling supporters.

McAllister, making only his sixth first-team appearance, scored his first senior goal when he collected O'Brien's cross from the left and sent a shot arrowing into the top corner of the net.

Aljofree then made a second timely intervention to deny Brunt before Plymouth sent on popular playmaker Akos Buzsaky and another creative influence, Bojan Djordjic, in place of Tony Capaldi and Luke Summerfield.

The urgency increased as the second half progressed with both teams appearing keen to turn one point into three, and after Plymouth defender Mathias Doumbe had tried his luck a couple of times, Brunt hit the crossbar with a left-foot strike.

Despite their lack of options up front the visitors were looking more dangerous and Pilgrims goalkeeper Luke McCormick had to parry a shot from John Hills, who eight minutes from time provided the assist for the winner.

Hills got forward to the left side of the penalty area and sent over a cross that O'Brien converted with his left foot.

Plymouth substitute Sylvan Ebanks-Blake tested Jones with a header in the dying moments but could not level the scores as Argyle's promising start to the campaign was halted in frustrating fashion.
