  • Greyhound To Watch: JAMAICAN RASTA

A greyhound named JAMAICAN RASTA was purchased last week at the National Greyhound Association (NGA) spring auction in Abilene, Kansas.

JAMAICAN RASTA, a male born in September 2005, was purchased for $2,500 by Michael A. Lasky. Jamaican Rasta won a non-wagering exhibition race at Abilene last week.

At the semi-annual NGA meets, greyhounds for sale run one non-wagering race in groups of six. When a dog is ready to race at a track, it runs one to three non-wagering "schooling" races before being allowed in an official
    wagering race in grade "maiden".

Established dogs are also placed in schooling races after time off, or to build the dog's confidence. Greyhounds race once every four to seven days, depending on the dog. Most races are 5/16 mile (550 yards) or 3/8 mile (660 yards.)

Greyhounds start racing at age 18 months to 2 years.
