CHAPLETON, Clarendon — Former schoolboy football kingpins Clarendon College and Vere Technical will be hoping to roll back the hands of time when they meet in Chapleton in a top-of-thezone (H) clash as the ISSA Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup continues with 34 games across all 12 zones.
Despite none of them winning any of their many titles since 1998, they have both got off to good starts in Zone H and this long-time rivalry will attract a lot of interest.
Clarendon have won four games in a row and are yet to concede a goal, while except for a 2-2 draw in their first game, Vere have cruised to wins in their next three games to be tied on 10 points with Lennon, two behind leaders Clarendon.
Between them Clarendon College and Vere Technical won 14 titles between 1965 and 1998, and while Vere have not won since 1976, they dominated the competition winning eight of nine competitions contested between 1965 and 1976.
Clarendon’s dominance, which started under the legendary Winston Chung-Fah, started in 1997 when they won back-to-back titles then again in 1991, 1994, 1996 and 1998 when Patrick ‘Jackie’ Walters was coach.
The teams have not met in zonal competition since the 2000 season when Clarendon won the return round game after the first round game ended 0-0.
Damali Samuels of Clarendon and Michael Moreland of Vere are among four players who have scored six goals so far and both will be expected to lead their teams today.
Vere were big 5-0 winners on Thursday over Claude McKay, while Clarendon just got home ahead of Thompson 1-0.
Defending champions Glenmuir High are expected to unleash their vengeance on Tacius Golding today after losing 1-0 to Garvey Maceo on Thursday.
Glenmuir lost a first round game for the first time since the 2001 season and are expected to hit back against Tacius Golding who have conceded nine goals in three games so far.
Fresh from their big win, Garvey Maceo are expected to win their fourth straight game when they take on Central High at Effortville Community Centre.
Meanwhile, a number of other schools will be seeking to protect perfect win records today, eight will be gunning for win number four, while Rusea's will seek their third win.
After easy wins over Green Island and Cambridge, Rusea’s will have their hands full against Frome Technical at Frome in a mouthwatering Zone B meeting.
Frome have dominated the recent meetings between both schools, winning five of the last eight meetings while Rusea's have won once — the return leg meeting last year.
While Frome have had to outscore their opponents so far, Rusea's have scored eight unanswered goals in their two games played so far and will be bubbling with confidence going into today's game.
In Zone A, both Cornwall College and St James High are expected to beat Herbert Morrison and Anchovy respectively and stay on course for a big clash on Wednesday.
Herbert Morrison and Anchovy have both struggled this season, while Cornwall and St James have cruised with almost mirror-image wins.
Radcliff Hall has scored six of Cornwall's seven goals so far, while Nicholie Barrett has scored all six of St James High's goals.
Munro will be hoping to avoid repeating last season's mishaps when they lost their fourth game after winning the first three when they take on Black River who will be hoping to avoid losing three game in one week.
Black River were upset 0-1 by Newell on Tuesday, then lost 0-2 to STETHS Thursday. Under new coach, Hopeton Gilchrist, Munro have scored seven times in their three wins so far including a 2-0 blanking of arch rivals STETHS.
One goal separates Zone J leaders Dinthill and Charlemont who will meet today, both on seven points from two wins and a draw. Both have scored six goals, but Charlemont have conceded two to Dinthill's one.
Charlemont won both of last season's meetings between the schools and three of the last four.
