GOLD CUP PREPARATION IN HIGH GEAR

Jamaica drew 2-2 with a local “All-Stars” team on Sunday at Jarrett Park to conclude what Technical Director Carl Brown describes as a, “as an excellent week of hard work.”

The Reggae Boyz, who have been training in the second city since last Monday (hosted by El Greco Hotel), scored through Fabian Taylor and Shane Crawford, while the “All-Stars” registered tallies by Wolry Wolfe and Gregory Simpson. Jermaine Johnson, like all the other foreign-based players, did not play until the final 20 minutes. The Bolton Wanderers man missed a penalty near the end which would have assured victory for the Boyz.

The team, who did mainly physical work in Montego Bay, returns to Kingston today (Monday) where they will continue preparation for the Gold Cup (July 12-27). However, before that, they will meet Cuba on July 6 and Paraguay on July 9 in International Friendlies at the National Stadium.

Off the field, Brown has been getting first-hand knowledge of one of his first-round Gold Cup rivals, Colombia, who have been quite impressive in the current FIFA Confederations Cup in France. The games are being shown on local TV. The coaching staff is also expected to have a ‘spy’ in San Francisco on July 2 when Guatemala play Peru.

In the Gold Cup, Jamaica play Colombia on July 13 in the Orange Bowl in Miami and Guatemala two days later at the same venue. Two teams will advance from the group, with the winner remaining in Miami for the second round and the second –place team flying to Mexico City.
