The very fanciful Gregory Messam was a popular player with the fans during the Rene Simoes era. A solid left back who overlaps quite well, he was always a sure pick to be in the Reggae Boyz starting line-up. He eventually lost his place to child prodigy, Ricardo Gardner, during the France'98 qualifying campaign.
Like a number of other Jamaican players, Messam plays club soccer both in Jamaica and the USA. He plays for Olympic Gardens FC of the Jamaican National Premier League, and has represented the Richmond Kickers of the USA A-League since 1998.
A former U23 representative, Messam accompanied the Reggae Boyz to the World Cup finals in France, though not as a player. He received a consolation trip from the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) following the recommendation of then TD, Rene Simoes. Simoes stated, 'It was difficult for me as Messam was really one of the favorite players. He has done a lot for the programme, he has given his life to it and his commitment.'
Previous TD, Sebastio Lazaroni, recalled Messam in 2000, but the player declined, citing injury.
