Born in Lambeth, England, Powell became a member of the Reggae Boyz squad in 1998, just before the World Cup finals in France.
The player made his international debut for Jamaica in a game against Wales, that game ending in a scoreless draw. He scored his first international goal soon after, in a game against South Korea in Seoul. He was then chosen to the Jamaican World Cup squad and made an inauspicious start against powerhouse, Argentina. He unfortunately committed two bookable offences and was sent off in the first half, thus ending his World Cup appearance.
Powell, though, has now blossomed into a key member and leader within the squad. His play so far in this World Cup qualifying run has been quite noteworthy, with him bringing some measure of stability to a midfield that desperately needed it.
Darryl has played club football for Derby County FC, of the English Premier League since 1995. He battled his way off the bench, and through good performances and his display of leadership qualities, was made captain. His appearances for Derby have in the past been hampered by injuries, but now fully recovered, he marshalls the midfield with aplom.
Powell is a hard worker and good ball distributor. He is not the type to dribble down the field, but will instead stop the opposing team with forcefull tackles. His control and off the ball movement is what one would expect from a player that is now a seasoned campaigner in one of world's toughest leagues. With the sudden retirement of Fitzroy Simpson, Powell is now expected, at least by the fans, to shoulder more of the defensive and stabilizing midfield role in order to free up the more creative midfield players.
