Fitzroy Simpson is an English born player who chose to represent Jamaica in international soccer. He, along with former teammate Paul Hall, came to Jamaica in the summer of 1997, in order to try out for the Jamaican national football team, a move that proved to be a success.
He made his international debut against Canada on September 7, 1997 and remained a key member of the team up until his retirement. Simpson brought toughness, a sense of urgency, accurate passing, and terrific long ball distribution. His on-field leadership at a crucial stage in Jamaica's bid to qualify for the 1998 World Cup finals in France could not have been more timely.
His best game for the black, green and gold was probably at RFK Stadium on Friday, October 3, 1997 against the USA. His performance was nothing short of outstanding, ultimately earning him the ESPN Man of the Match award. He went on to represent Jamaica at the World Cup finals in France, though his performance was a little below par.
The player who recently turned out for club side Hearts, of the Scottish Premier League, appeared set to assist the Reggae Boyz on their quest for another World Cup berth. This though will not be, as Fitzroy Simpson announced his retirement from international football on Wednesday July 6, 2000 at the Hilton Kingston Hotel.
He wished the team all the best and thanked the fans for their support. Still, many fans are hoping that the player will have a change of heart and consider donning the Reggae Boyz jersey once more; a jersey that has brought both him and his country so much international recognition.
