Wolde Harris-Former-Player squad
Wolde Harris was simply a goal-scoring machine, during his college years, for Clemson University. He recorded three consecutive seasons with twenty or more goals (1993, '94, '95), becoming Clemson’s all-time leading goalscorer, having netted 76. He was named to the All-American soccer team during his senior year in college, and also made the 2nd team All-American during his junior and sophomore years.
Harris' exploits on the field gained further prominence during the 1996 A-League season in the United States. Playing for the Colorado Foxes, Wolde had an extraordinary year, finishing as the league's leading goal scorer with 17. Apart from being top goal scorer, he won the award for Rookie of the Year, and also walked away with Most Valuable Player honours.
In spite of his US achievements, the powerfully built forward has not had much success with the Jamaica national team. Scoring a hattrick against the Cayman Islands in a friendly international, has been his most noteworthy accomplishment to date.
His apparent failure to impress, however, needs to to placed in the proper perspective. In the past he was scarcely used, playing only in a few World Cup qualifying games in 1997/98. He was never thought to be a part of Rene Simoes' plan, and as such was not selected to the squad for the '98 World Cup finals in France.
With the appointment of new TD, Clovis de Olivera and on the stregth of excellent MLS performances, Wolde has seen his call-ups and playing time drastically increase. This has been to the delight of many, who are hoping that his improved performance will ulimately lead to him being a regular in the Reggae Boyz squad.
Wolde's club career has seen him play predominantly in the U.S.A., even though like other Reggae Boyz teammates with US clubs, he does turn out for a Jamaica NPL team, namely Harbour View FC. Harris' first three professional seasons were spent with the Colorado Rapids. At the start of the 2000 season he was traded to the New England Revolution and went about having his best MLS season to date. He led the Revolution to the playoffs, scoring 15 regular season goals, at one point scoring in six consecutive games.
Prior to the start of the 200 MLS season, he spent some time in England with Stokes City of the 1st Division. He scored a number of goals for the club in practice matches, but after a change in club management he was no longer considered and returned to the MLS. This artice has been viewed 5701 times.
