Winston 'Fanna' Griffiths is a product of Jamaica’s youth system under Rene Simoes. He, like so many of the younger squad members, benefited from the numerous training camps conducted under the watchful eye of Simoes and his staff. Griffiths came through the ranks, impressing at youth levels. This culminated in his selection to the national senior team, albeit on an infrequent basis.
Fanna Griffiths just missed being named to the World Cup squad, but was one of about eight players taken to France to experience the atmosphere, courtesy of the Jamaica Football Federation.
Griffiths currently plays club soccer for Galaxy FC in Jamaica's NPL, but with the club having been relegated after the 1999/2000 season, has been exploring other options. He's had a series of trials in England, and even spent time at Bolton Wanderers, club of Reggae boyz teammate, Ricardo Gardner.
Fanna who hails from the southwestern parish of St. Elizabeth, is a strong left-sided midfielder with sublime dribbling skills. He is most effective when running at defenders and has the ability to carry the ball from deep in his own half, but too often he fails to stamp his authority on the midfield and ends up drifting in and out of the game.
His play on the senior team to date has not been on par with the potential he displayed at the junior levels, when he and the young Reggae Boyz terrorized regional opponents. The hope is that once he gets his confidence level back up, he will mature into a very solid player.
