MVP might leave Jamaica
published: Thursday | September 11, 2008

Stephen Francis - File
MAXIMIZING VELOCITY and Power (MVP) Track Club, the home of Olym-pic champions Shelly-Ann Fraser and Melaine Walker, along with Asafa Powell, could leave Jamaica soon.

Paul Francis, the group's assistant coach and director, confirmed what his brother and head coach, Stephen Francis, said on local radio on Tuesday night.

May happen sooner "That (move) is something that has to be thought about and it may happen sooner than later," Paul Francis said, echoing the comments made by his brother on Hitz 92 FM's Sports Grill programme on Tuesday night.

That's all good, but both coaches should use this opportunity to invest whatever benefits they get from the successes of their JAMAICANS athlete back into the Jamaican track and field infrastructure.

How feasible is this move and where would they move to? I think this is another ploy on the part of Stephen Francis (Not MVP) to try and get some public sympathy.

First of all Stephen is employed to UTech but that is only a contrcat and he can walk away fro it anytime he chooses.

Now people have been talking about moving to the US but that wont come cheap nor easy. First things first all his athletes would have to apply for and get the H2 visas as they cant just go to the US to live and train.

The coaches and other staff would also have to get work permits.

Plus who would fund this very expensive venture as a number of the athletes live at home and commute to training.

Additionally how many of these athletes will give up school at UTech and other places to go live in the US or elsewhere where they will have to PAY tertiary fees?

What happens to his high schoolers that he has actively recruited the last three years who are not yet elite athletes, will he abandon them..or just leave programes for the to work with.

Sorry to throw this out there but I cant just accept these things just like that without thinking of how it will work.

Good questions!
I am thinking he could leave...and leave most if not all of his athletes...if the money is right.

Currently he is making a good living with his current charges. Would he throw that out for a new beginning? New beginning it would be!

They will need a a college for the students and T&T has UWI campus and no visa requirements.

As to why the club is contemplating this move, especially with the success of training at the University of the Technology (UTech) and Stadium East, Paul Francis, could only repeat what his brother said: "Because he (Stephen) has been getting strong demand to coach other athletes and some of these athletes may not sit well with Jamaica."

getting Visa fi the top Ahtlete wouldn't be a problem. The US would also try to get some fi switch to them.

As you say it is expensive but remember there is alway Dubai and China who can pay Millions.

Was wondering if the UK was being considered too. The presence of a Caribbean community is a big plus.

It is hard to see Jamaican athletes being comfortable in a place like Dubai.

Money will mek anyone comfortable in Dubai. But, I would expect the Emirates people would require the man dem change dem citizenship and tek a Muslim name, before dollars flow.
