Mi wouldn't waste time going over 800m.

Even 800m is a problem as the coaching time is one on one and very intensive.

Not really a stable setup, rather a one horse setup and yuh haffi mek sure yuh back the right horse!

Someone wants a marathon camp for Jamaicans? That would be a waste of resources...the results would be poor

A middle distance camp 800m or even 1500m would be better.

Better still is to funnel some short sprinters of whom we have a surfeit at the moment...into the 400m and try to catch Babylon inna dat in say 5 years...dem way ahead

Agreed 100% and it isnt reserved for that twitch fiber gene in my opinion, Wariner, Freeman and the juiced eastern europeans proved this.

There are several factors which determine why a GROUP consistently displays superior performance in sprinting... as opposed to random individuals who compete in sprints

Extreme desire to succeed & community support of that goal
    Dedication to training
    World class training from coaches
    Early talent identification & development
Competitive environment ...aka High School Champs
    Genetic predisposition for speed

No one factor is sufficient on its own for success in sprinting for a GROUP performing over time in the sport (decades) but all are necessary. One can attempt a ranking of the factors but the order would be subjective...most agree that desire and environmental factors like coaching & competition are paramount.....even scientists with the speed gene theory agree that's the case.

An individual whose background does not meet all the above criteria but yet still achieves success at sprinting merely reflects a case of an exception proving the rule.

Its not just muscle type, its joint geometry as well.

It takes a certain combination and yuh find that more among certain populations.

It does not mean exclusively, but if you play the odds....

    Peter !

Does having that muscle twitch gene mean you are born to run faster ? again the eastern german women gave the yanks with the muscle twich gene a run for their money when the playing field was evenly juiced in the 70s & 80s.

Jermy wariner currently gives the muscle twicth genes a run for their money , so did cathy freeman ( australain aborgene ) in her hey day.

Systems (training methods, number of athletes, interest in sport) of course have to do with it also. FYI, West Africans have run fast (below 9.9) also.

But not eveybody with that muscle can run fast. West African decents are runnig fast but the west Africans themselves can't?

It has to be more than that. What make people run fast? Remember Bolt was not suppose to run so fast over the 100 metre.

How is it some sprinters are from families that has no other runners(not even at the local level) in that family?
