  • BRUCE is dead

Jamaica-bred champion racehorse, BRUCEONTHELOOSE, died at Santa Rosa Park, Trinidad and Tobago, on Wednes-day and was buried at the racetrack where he won 22 races and was a three-time Horse of the Year.

The Trinidad Guardian, which carried a picture of the burial of the Jamaica-bred runner, reported that "the racing fraternity was dealt a severe blow yesterday, when thrice Horse of The Year, BRUCEONTHELOOSE, died at Santa Rosa Park".

BRUCEONTHELOOSE, dubbed 'Bolt' by the Trinidadian public, after Usain Bolt, Jamaica's triple world record sprinter, reportedly died from colic.

The Guardian reported, "Over the last two decades, there has not been a racehorse which captured the imagination and generated such public interest as the seven-year-old grey. Since the days of the great creoles Jetsam, Airofaith, Mentone no horse has generated such interest".

"The Tres Amigos owned BRUCEONTHELOOSE was held in the highest regard by turfites and has been compared to greats like True Gold, Aurelian, Young Turnabout, Ferry Boat, Aquarius, Royal Colours, Windy Hill, Conquest, Clown Prince, Sians Gold, Sugar Mike and Top of the Class."

BRUCEONTHELOOSE finished unplaced in his final start on Boxing Day when he attempted to win the Gold Cup for a second time.

The Guardian further noted that BRUCEONTHELOOSE "has rewritten the history books on many occasions and will be missed".

BRUCEONTHELOOSE arrived in Trinidad in July, 2009, with the Curriculum Vitae (CV) which made him the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of racing in the South Caribbean.

    rough passage

Prior to departing Jamaica, BRUCEONETHELOOSE annihilated the opposition in two legs of the Jamaica Triple Crown, the 2000 Guineas and St Leger, but lost the Triple Crown between those runs after enduring a rough passage in the Jamaica Derby, losing by a short head to HE'S REALLY OK.

BRUCEONTHELOOSE has won 22 races from 29 starts in Trinidad and Tobago and amassed more than US$3 million in earnings.

Over the last 11 months, BRUCEONTHELOOSE carried all before except for blotting his record in the President's Cup when beaten by Strikes Not Spares and Mobthewarrior.

Apart from that blemish, he won on five occasions in 2012, marching triumphantly to victory in the Caribbean Champion Stakes and should prevail as the 2012 Horse of The Year.

                From Wikipedia:

Colic in horses is defined as abdominal pain, but it is a clinical sign rather than a diagnosis. The term colic can encompass all forms of gastrointestinal conditions which cause pain as well as other causes of abdominal pain not involving the gastrointestinal tract. The most common forms of colic are gastrointestinal in nature and are most often related to colonic disturbance. There are a variety of different causes of colic, some of which can prove fatal without surgical intervention. Colic surgery is usually an expensive procedure as it is major abdominal surgery, often with intensive aftercare. Among domesticated horses, colic is the leading cause of premature death. The incidence of colic in the general horse population has been estimated between 10 and 11 percent on an annual basis. It is important that any person who owns or works with horses be able to recognize the signs of colic and determine whether or not a veterinarian should be called.
