  • While in other sporting news: Tyson Gay returns

Former world 100 metres champion Tyson Gay makes his return from a one-year drugs ban in Lausanne on Thursday night against two US relay team-mates who could yet lose their Olympic medal as a result of his cheating.

The men’s 4x100m relay team, including Ryan Bailey and Justin Gatlin, have not been told if they will be stripped of silver from London 2012 after Gay handed back his medal following three positive tests for a banned anabolic steroid last year.

Gay admitting to doping from July 2012 but had the standard two-year ban cut to a year after ‘truthfully co-operating’ with authorities.

One former drugs cheat, Justin Gatlin, ran the quickest 100m time in the world this year on Thursday night, while another, Tyson Gay, made his comeback with 9.93secs in second place.

In so many ways, this was a sad night for track and field at the Diamond League meeting in Lausanne.

Gatlin, who served a four-year ban for a second positive test in 2006, powered to victory in 9.80secs, but his USA team-mate Gay certainly did not look like a man who has spent a year on the sidelines

We don't know. The story that controlling bodies gave to the public to justify lifting the ban was that he co-operated in the investigation. Was the banned drug obtained and administered illegally? What is the significance of his co-operation? He admitted to taking the drug which was clearly stated on the label. He gets to return to the sport and to make money to pay his bills and take care of his family while Asafa and Sherone can't continue to earn a living for a lesser crime. Where is the noise from the "purity of sports crusaders", the British press?
