FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Jamaica Football Federation would like to state categorically that protocol was followed in relation to flight and accommodation arrangements made for both the Under-15 females and the Under-17 males who recently represented the country in Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) age group championships.
According to the rules of the competition, all teams “should arrange their departure for the day immediately following the end of the Preliminary Round”, August 6 for the females and August 5, for the males. Additionally each team was advised that should they advance to the semi-final round of the competition, flights should be postponed until August 11, 2008 and August 10, 2008 for the females and males respectively.
When it became apparent that the teams would advance to the later rounds, the Federation did as it was advised by the organizers of the competition, the CFU and tried to make the appropriate bookings. Our efforts to have the youngsters, who have done the country proud, home, have been hampered by the failings of Caribbean travel.
At this time of the year there is only one flight per day on one airline leaving Trinidad and Tobago for Jamaica. What makes the situation worse is that this happens to be peak season for Caribbean travel resulting in the daily flight being overbooked.
The Federation has not ceased in its efforts to get the youngsters home and have managed to establish a schedule of departure beginning with a small group of females today. They will continue to do so until Friday, August 15, when the final group of females and a small number of males arrive. The males will continue in a similar fashion until Thursday August 21, if not before.
As it relates to accommodation, the JFF president, Captain Horace Burrell, has personally guaranteed to cover the expenses of the team during the remainder of their stay in Trinidad and Tobago. Through the JFF General Secretary Horace Reid, The JFF president has instructed the CFU acting General Secretary, Angenie Kanhai to ensure that all arrangements be made to keep the Under-17 boys in the Ambassador Hotel where they are now located.
Carlton Dennis Head of Delegation for the male team in Trinidad and Tobago today expressed satisfaction with efforts made by the Federation to make them comfortable.
“Right now a lot of people are traveling out of Trinidad so we were placed on standby which has been difficult at times. We’re satisfied with all the arrangements being made by the Federation as well as the assistance received from the Jamaican High Commission here in Trinidad and Tobago to get the situation sorted out”.
“We understand that we will not all get to return at once but we are satisfied with what is taking place now. There were plans to relocate us but the Federation has intervened through Captain Burrell to have us remain where we are currently housed and he has personally guaranteed the extra costs,” Dennis added.
Manager of the female team, Elaine Walker-Brown, who arrived with the first group of girls earlier today said the girls still in Trinidad and Tobago were comfortable and in good spirits.
“The girls are comfortable. In fact they are more comfortable now than when the competition was going on and as long as they are fine we are,” Brown said representing both herself and Lorraine Scringer, the head of the female delegation.
