  • CONCACAF Report On Tuesday's U-20 Games

/10/2009 - BACOLET, Tobago – The United States and Honduras both won their final group games Tuesday and advanced to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship, earning places at the U-20 World Cup in Egypt.

Mario Martinez, Roger Rojas and Cristhian Altimirano all scored in the second half to add to Johnny Leveron’s 44th-minute tally, leading Honduras over Jamaica 4-0.

In the later game, first-half goals by Brek Shea and Tony Taylor enabled the United States to withstand the expulsion of Shea and Jorge Flores in the final 31 minutes to beat El Salvador 2-0.

The results finished the USA atop Group A with seven points, not having conceded a goal in three matches. Honduras, which was the last to qualify for the eight-team CONCACAF championship, finished second with five points, two ahead of Jamaica and four ahead of El Salvador.

The United States advanced to the U-20 World Cup, to be played September 24-October 16, for the seventh straight time while Honduras qualified for second time in three tries and fifth overall.

A blackout for the second time in the tournament delayed the start of the USA-El Salvador game for 15 minutes. But Shea scored in the 30th minute and Taylor added his in the 42nd to give the Americans a 2-0 halftime lead.

Shea was sent off in the 59th minute and Taylor followed with seven minutes to go, but the United States still prevailed to qualify for a 12th time for the U-20 World Cup. The United States, which has never won the CONCACAF title, will face the runner-up from Group B in Friday’s semifinals.

Honduras will face the Group B winner in the other semifinal.

Martinez scored in the 47th minute while Rojas and Altimirano added their tallies in the 62nd and 74th.

Rojas scored for the third time in four games. He also scored in Honduras’ 3-1 playoff victory over St. Vincent and the Grenadines on March 2 and in a 2-2 draw against El Salvador in the tournament opener.

Jamaica finished with three points after losing two of three matches and being outscored 8-2.

The Young Boyz, who ended the match with 10 men after defender Keithy Simpson was expelled in the 89th minute, have qualified only once for the U-20 World Cup, in 2001.
