  • Habour View's Sydney Masters passes on

    Tuesday, March 31st, 2009.

PRESIDENT, SYDNEY MASTERS THE SOFT-SPOKEN PIONEER OF HVFC!

Modest in his demeanour, resolute in his convictions, the quite giant was always present to lend his invaluable advice to any and all situations relevant to the sport of football and life in general, always emphasizing a disciplined approach.

A man who stood for no-nonsense was strident in his commitment to lead a fledgling Club to the realms of professionalism by dint of ones personal resolve to pull yourselves up by your own bootstraps into the new world of international recognition through high level performances continually.

Bold in his vision from the late sixties as we entered the early 1970’s when the newly developed community of Harbour View was just experiencing its first decade of existence. Already the community youngsters had organized themselves somewhat and showed the positive signs that these talented players could achieve by themselves entering and reaching the 1969 Summer finals of the then Desnoes and Geddes (D&G) Minor League Under 16 competition against Pembroke Hall.

He jumped in head-first to assist, guide and help to form an official group to become a formal administration as Treasurer along with Carvel Stewart, adding to Terrence Slater, Ronald “Piggy” Chung as Manager, Vin Blaine as President and Ewan “Shanny” Hayles elder brother of “DV” and a few other football loving individuals in the community like Patrick Brissett, Vincent Besley, Micheal Pennycooke, Michael Jureidini and Neville Jolly plus many others.

On March 4th, 1974 the official Annual General Meeting voted in the new body as they name was changed formally to the Harbour View Football Club, when Vin Blaine migrated sometime after President Masters was installed.

Recently on Wednesday, March 4th, 2009 at the Harbour View Stadium we honoured President Masters along with Carvel and Vin as the “Three Wise-men from the East” who has shepherded this flock into the promised land, still active some 35 years later .

Unfortunately it was at that game against Meadhaven United that we were informed he was just rushed to the hospital and could not attend, he recovered soon after but was again admitted two weeks later to the University Hospital in the Tony Thwaites Wing.

His single-minded commitment to his late wife Eynid, who passed away last year, the only football Club he was active within, KSAFA Committees and INSPORTS where he served voluntarily, as well as his community all are testament to the cause he believed in.

His many decades with Grace Kennedy Company Limited was his real devotion to the company he revered as the epitomy of the corporate giant of Jamaican institutions in how they lead the sector, developed an international brand and exported professionally to show the world the true magnitude of how rich the Jamaican culture, tradition through proper organization can conquer new frontiers whenever given the opportunity to excel.

We will miss you guiding light, spirit and sharp corrections when all is not perfect.

The Harbour View Football Club, Staff and Community expresses our sincerest Condolences to his family, friends. The entire football fraternity is much richer for his timeless contribution.

May your soul rest in peace perpetually.

    ” One Love, Come-on-the-View!”

Received in an e-mail from general manager of Harbour View Football Club, Clyde Jureidini - Date: Tue, 31 Mar 2009 08:10:08 -0700 [10:10:08 AM CDT]

Harbour View stalwart Masters passes on

      Wednesday, April 01, 2009
Long-serving president of the Harbour View Football Club, Sydney Masters, passed away at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) following a brief illness on Monday morning. He was 74.

MASTERS. president of Harbour View FC from 1974 until his death
Masters, who assumed the role of president of the famous Jamaican club in 1974, remained president until the time of his passing, and ironically, it was earlier in the month that the club, as part of its 35th anniversary, honoured Masters, along with Carvel Stewart and Vin Blaine - the three main principals behind the success of the club.

In paying tribute to the Harbour View stalwart, the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) president Captain Horace Burrell said Masters was instrumental in the development of the Harbour View Football Club and steering it to its current status as the model for other ambitious clubs to emulate.

He was a true community man and played a major role in the development of youngsters in the Harbour View community on and off the ball. The current national captain and the first home-grown Jamaican player to succeed in the English Premier League, Ricardo 'Bibi' Gardner, owes a large part of his success to the structure of the club, most of which were presided over by Masters.

"While Mr Masters and his wife who pre-deceased him, had no children of their own, they were more than parental figures for countless youngsters in Harbour View. One could say the club and Jamaica's football will be poorer for his passing, but I say, Harbour View and the Jamaican football landscape were richer for his life and work," said Captain Burrell in expressing condolence to the Harbour View football family.

Meanwhile, the Harbour View Football Club also paid tribute to its fallen president, the "soft-spoken pioneer" of Harbour View FC.

"Modest in his demeanour, resolute in his convictions, the quiet giant was always present to lend his invaluable advice to any and all situations relevant to the sport of football and life in general, always emphasising a disciplined approach," the club said.

"A man who stood for no-nonsense was strident in his commitment to lead a fledgling club to the realms of professionalism by dint of ones personal resolve to pull yourselves up by your own bootstraps into the new world of international recognition through high-level performances continually.

"His single-minded commitment to his late wife Eynid, who passed away last year, the only football club he was active within, KSAFA committees and INSPORTS where he served voluntarily, as well as his community all are testament to the cause he believed in.

Good man, who loved football and Harbour View.

Even when he became ill, Prezzy refused to miss Harbour View's matches. I saw him a few weeks ago, being propped up in an SUV to watch HVFC play Meadhaven at Constant Spring, as he was too weak to leave the vehicle, though he tried!

He didn't miss a training session, was easy to talk to and a very practical man. We could never pass each other without exchanging some words.

        He shall be missed!
