  • It's impossible to play in La Paz, says Messi

Playing soccer in the high altitude of La Paz is "impossible" and Argentina must learn a lesson from their stunning 6-1 defeat to Bolivia there, striker Lionel Messi said.

La Paz, the world's highest venue for international games, lies at 3,600 metres above sea level and Argentina face another World Cup qualifier at altitude in June when they visit Ecuador. That match will be played at 2,800m above sea level in Quito.

"It's very painful, we knew that we would lose at some stage but we didn't think it would be like this," he told reporters at Buenos Aires airport before boarding a flight for Spain.

    "It's impossible to play there.

"Everyone struggled. You sprint a bit and it's difficult to get your breath back and you could see that they were faster. They also played at a very fast rhythm, and they shot from everywhere."

"This has to be a lesson for the match in June," said Messi. "We have to look forward."

Messi's view is different to his coach Diego Maradona, who has refused to blame altitude for the defeat, his first since taking over as coach in October.

Maradona publicly supported Bolivia when FIFA banned La Paz from hosting international games last year, at one stage playing a charity match alongside President Evo Morales. The ban was later overturned.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)

Exactly the point I was making a few days back. It is very hard to breathe in *thin* air 12000ft above sea level. I saw parts of this game and Messi and alot of the Argentine players were alot slower. Every team uses every possible home advantage to get a win. This was advantage Bolivia but Argentina will nail Bolivia in Buenos Aires in the return match up.

But is it an unfair advantage? Theoretically they have a chance to win all the home games more so than other teams.

Not that it will make a difference... I don't see them moving up in the standings but, they could be a spoiler ...Uruguay Colombia and eEcuador aren't that far back of Arg.

Finances, stadia, infrastructure aside would Bolivia ever be considered to host the World Cup?

Mexico City is about 7,000 ft. La Paz is about 12,000! At elevation but one significantly more so.

There is a country that plays on a rockhard frozen ground....and another that plays on sand (Used to play on sand? Not sure what the situation is now with artificial pitches and oil money being available to create pitches.)

Those against a ban - dangerous to life and limb! The counter-argument to those who argue against the game being played in these places, part of the country and football has been played there from 'wappy waus a bwoy!

Argentina has been playing in La Paz for 'ages' and I cannot remember her losing like this?

                  *Argentina at La Paz!
