MANCHESTER UNITED have missed out on another big transfer target after Karim Benzema agreed to join Real Madrid.

A statement on Lyon's website confirmed that their £30million striker wanted to become part of the Madrid revolution along with other big-money summer signings Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka.
The statement read: "Lyon announce they have reached an agreement with Real Madrid on the details of the transfer of their international attacker Karim Benzema.
"A few days ago Karim Benzema informed the club president Jean Michel Aulas of his desire to move to the Madrid club, which had always been his favourite club after Lyon, earlier than he had foreseen.
"The player wanted to seize the opportunity which Real Madrid offered him to be one of the major elements in their new ambitious project based around the greatest players of the world.
"Lyon accepted Karim Benzema's decision and negotiated the conditions of a transfer which satisfies all the different parties.
"The club wishes Karim the greatest success with Real Madrid."
United had been tracking Benzema, 21, since he made his debut in 2004.
The striker has smashed 43 goals in 112 games for the French outfit and his form had alerted United boss Alex Ferguson.
Earlier in the day, Benzema's agent Karim Djaziri confirmed a deal with Real was imminent. He said: "Benzema will sign for Real Madrid tonight.
"For the moment nothing is official on the side of Lyon but he will join Madrid in exchange for £30million plus bonuses.
"In the next few hours some details need to be agreed between the player and Real Madrid, in particular his wages and terms of the contract."
Real director general Jorge Valdano had earlier claimed a deal would be announced later today.
Valdano said: "We do not discard the possibility that in the next few hours, something could happen."
Benzema is the Spaniards' fourth summer signing following the arrivals of Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo and Raul Albiol.
Valdano also confirmed that at present a move for Valencia's talented frontman David Villa is unlikely.
He said: "Nothing will happen with Villa over the next few days because Valencia have not changed their stance."

ergo.....there was a buy-out clause in his contract which was original thought impossible. Little did we know that fool-fool RM would actually cough up the money. They are the ones who are over-inflating the market. Everything will come crashing down around them if they don't make back their money soon. Ronaldo will become uncontrollable and will start to dictate. He CANNOT get benched regardless of how he plays. He has to maintain or improve his form for the next two years for RM to see any realistic returns on their money.

Kaka and Robben play in the midfield. Ronaldo can play forward or as a winger. I read where they're trying to offload the entire Dutch entourage.
