Ricardo Gardner calls for more signings
RICARDO Gardner hopes Wanderers’ recruitment drive will continue well into the new season.
The Jamaican international completed his first 90 minutes for Wanderers in Tuesday night’s friendly at Hearts, meeting up with new team-mates Paul Robinson, Sam Ricketts, Zat Knight and Sean Davis for the first time.
Gary Megson has made five signings this summer — although the fifth, South Korean international Lee Chung-Yong is not expected to get his work permit cleared by the Home Office in time to face Hibs this weekend.
And Gardner would be happy to see even more new faces come through the Reebok doors to provide the competition for places that was sorely missing last season.
“It was a very small squad and it was hard at times,” he said.
“It’s great to see we have brought some players in. It will be competitive this season.
“There were a lot of gaps to fill and there are still a few to fill. Hopefully we will see a couple more players come to the club.”
Gardner featured in the centre of midfield for most of last season, moving in field from his usual position on the wing or at full-back.
The switch proved successful, with the 30-year-old bagging four goals and earning rave reviews from his manager.
But, fresh and ready from a disappointing Gold Cup with Jamaica over the summer, he is looking for improvement from both himself and the team.
“I’m hoping to do even better than last season,” he said. “The team can do better too, so long as we go into each game with the right frame of mind.
“The Premier League is always going to be difficult. There has been a lot of money spent this summer but football is a very funny game.
“There is a lot to be said for giving your all, believing in each other when you cross that line and doing your job properly. It means anything is possible.”
Gardner will be in action in tomorrow afternoon’s dress rehearsal against Hibs, which makes up part of Jussi Jaaskelainen’s charity testimonial.
And he reckons his long-time team-mate is fully deserving of the honour.
“He’s a fantastic goalkeeper, I can hardly find a word to describe him,” he said.
“It has been great working with him and he really deserves his testimonial. He has worked so hard for the club down the years.
“Every time he puts a Bolton Wanderers shirt on you know he is going to give it his best shot.
“People all over the world know his name and that he is one of the Premier League’s best.”
