HULL CITY are plotting an ambitious swoop for American star Freddy Adu.
The 20-year-old, who once had trials at Manchester United, has suffered a difficult spell in Europe since his move from Major League Soccer.
He was sent out on loan by Benfica to Portuguese club Belenenses but their new manager, Toni, has axed him from his squad.
Adu was one of the hottest prospects in world football when he signed for DC United at the age of 14 in 2004 and Hull manager Phil Brown is interested in linking him up with fellow American Jozy Altidore.
On-loan Altidore's temporary switch from Villarreal expires at the end of June and Hull are unlikely to take up their option of a £6.5million permanent move if his goalscoring does not improve in the second half of the season.
Brown hopes the pair will click playing alongside each other and Benfica are understood to be willing to listen to offers for Adu, with a bid of around £1.5m likely to be enough to snare the striker.
With the World Cup in his sights, Adu is desperate to play in the Premier League to force his way into the USA squad.
The striker has scored just twice in 15 international starts for his adopted country, having moved to the States from Ghana at the age of eight.
