The midfielder pounced on a mix-up between Blades defender Claude Davis and keeper Paul Gerrard, to tap in from eight yards nine minutes from time.

Stephen Quinn gave United the lead when he curled in a 20-yard free-kick.

Pompey also went close through Andy Cole, with a firm drive, while Matthew Taylor and Nico Kranjcar shaved the post with their low efforts.

History was very much against Portsmouth. The south-coast side had not recorded a win at Bramall Lane since 1955, and had lost 19 of the last 22 games played there.

But it was unlikely Pompey boss Harry Redknapp would have cared in the slightest for statistics, with his side 10 places above the Yorkshire side going into the match and favourites to claim their 11th win of the campaign.

The Blades had the best of the first half and new signing Jon Stead, who was impressive throughout the match, almost scored a debut goal in the first minute but headed his effort from Derek Geary's cross fell straight into the hands of David James.

Stead, who signed for £750,000 this week, then set up strike-partner Rob Hulse but his tame shot from 12 yards was saved comfortably by the Pompey keeper.

The pressure from the front pair paid off midway in the half when 20-year-old Quinn curled in a lovely free-kick to give the Blades the lead.

Portsmouth fought back well after the break and dominated much of the possession.

Pedro Mendes began to conduct proceedings in the middle of the park for the visitors, while his team-mates also pulled up their socks peppering the edge of the Blades area with a variety of high a low balls.

It seemed it was not going to be Portsmouth's day when Taylor and then Kranjcar beat Gerrard, but also his left-hand post by inches.

But his side persisted and finally got their reward thanks to a horrendous lack of communication between Davis and Gerrard.

With Benjani closing down the pair, they left it to each other to do something about the loose ball.

Unfortunately for the Blades, O'Neil was far more alert and tucked in to make those Bramall Lane statistics a little bit more pleasing to the eye for Redknapp.

    Warnock heaps blame on Davis

    Sun 14 Jan, 11:00 AM

Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock laid the blame for two dropped points against Portsmouth squarely on the shoulders of Claude Davis.Davis and goalkeeper Paul Gerrard were involved in a calamitous mix-up that gave Portsmouth a point from nothing in a 1-1 draw.

United looked set for victory heading into the closing stages after taking a 22nd-minute lead courtesy of a sweetly-taken free-kick from left-winger Stephen Quinn.

With nine minutes left to play, Davis thought Gerrard was going to claim a throughball into the area, while the Blades goalkeeper believed the Jamaican was going to clear.

In the end neither happened, and Portsmouth captain Gary O'Neil tapped home into an empty net from eight yards.

Asked whether Davis had held his hand up to the mistake, Warnock replied: "Held his hand up? No, because his head is still in his hands after that.

"You've got hope he learns from it, and hopefully he does.

"He wants to be the ideal centre-half, but if that's the case then he has to learn some of the bread and butter parts of defending."

Warnock rubbed salt into Davis' wounds by praising fellow centre-half Chris Lucketti, making his Premiership debut after being overlooked by the United boss all season.

"Chris was excellent," said Warnock of a player who remains transfer-listed despite his performance.

"I wish it had been him on the ball for their goal because I know where it would have ended up - row Z."

Warnock also exonerated Gerrard, saying: "Claude makes up Paul's mind for him because he is able to whack it wherever he wants.

"But you see what happens and we get punished for it, and in conceding a goal like that this result feels more like a defeat."

The point, though, was a deserved one for Portsmouth based on their second-half showing following a poor opening 45 minutes.

Manager Harry Redknapp's side are still flying high in the top six, and he feels that is where they deserve to finish the season.

"It was a fortunate goal, but I felt it was coming and it keeps us going," said Redknapp.

"We are still in the top six where we have been all season and if we could stay there then it would be fantastic.

"The top four will be as you are because they are on another level.

"You then have Bolton, ourselves an Tottenham, so it's going to be close.

"But if we can hang around in that area then it will be terrific for us this year, bearing in mind where we were last season.

"Right now we are one point off the total we finished with last season, so it's incredible to think just what we have done.

"If we did finish in the top six, it's not as if we wouldn't have deserved it."

Man, the coach not mincing his words in blaming Claude. Anyway, better game next time Claude. It gooes with the territory.
