Vogts to take over as Nigeria coach



Former Germany coach Berti Vogts is to take charge of Nigeria's national team, the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) said on Monday.



"Vogts has agreed to coach the Nigerian national team. He was chosen as the most suitable man to handle the Super Eagles," NFA official Tunde Aderibigbe told Reuters.



Vogts, who led Germany to victory at Euro 96 and also had spells in charge of Kuwait and Scotland, will take over on March 1 on a contract running until 2010, the German Bild newspaper reported.

"Vogts has agreed to coach the Nigerian national team. He was chosen as the most suitable man to handle the Super Eagles," NFA official Tunde Aderibigbe told Reuters.

Vogts, who led Germany to victory at UEFA EURO 96 and also had spells in charge of Kuwait and Scotland, will take over on March 1 on a contract running until 2010, the German Bild newspaper reported.

Vogts, who was picked over four other coaches interviewed for the job, signed a preliminary agreement with the NFA in London on Monday.

"A full agreement will be signed before the end of the month and it will spell out financial and other details of the contract," Aderibigbe added.

Vogts will replace Austin Eguavoen, who took Nigeria to third place at the CAF Africa Cup ofNations in Egypt last February but failed to get them into the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

"It's a great challenge," the 60-year-old Vogts was quoted as saying in a Bild report released to the media ahead of publication. "I'm wildly happy."

Nigeria's next major match will bea 2008 Cup of Nationsqualifier against Uganda in March.

Nigeria's sports authorities have often fallen out with their national team coaches over failure to pay wages, but Aderibigbe said local league sponsors, telecoms firm Globacom, had agreed to pay Vogts's bills.

Eguavoen said in September that he had not been paid in nine months.

Nigeria have won the Cup of Nations twice and Olympic gold in 1996.
