Omar Cummings To Return To Colorado After Loan Deal With Aston Villa Falls Through

    by Kirsten Schlewitz

Despite positive words about Omar Cummings from Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier, it seems the Colorado Rapids striker is headed back to the United States. Soccer journalist Frank Dell'Apa tweeted the news this afternoon: http://twitter.com/frankdellapa

Cummings has been training with the Premier League side since the end of December, but slight injury setbacks kept him from displaying his full capabilities early on. While Houllier noted that Cummings was getting better with every training session, it seems that the Rapids man is now surplus to requirements. Of course, the Villa have spent the day working on a surprise move for Sunderland forward Darren Bent, and are set to pay upwards of £18M for him. With Cummings set to provide cover for an injured Emile Heskey and a departing John Carew, it seems that the impending arrival of Bent has deemed him surplus to requirements.

Rapid fans must be thrilled, however. While exposure with a Premier League side would have certainly helped advance Cummings' game, it could also have led to Aston Villa purchasing him outright, leaving Colorado without their top scorer.

once Bent came in the picture then I knew it was hardly likely.

      MLS should free the player!

Sounds like he was rejected because of moves made by Villa. Not MLS.

Skysport reported that he had work permit issues. British Home Office at it again.

I thought it would be difficult for him to qualify for a work permit based on our average FIFA ranking over the last two years.

How so Mo? They are giving him on loan and asking 2 million for him. Isn't that a fair offering??? Should they let him leave for nothing???

mls is not what stopping him from getting a work permit. the LARGER issue of MLS ownership of player rights is relevant though.

                      Omar Cummings Is Heading Home

If your windows were open Monday night, you may have heard the loud collective sigh of relief from Rapids’ fans everywhere. The Colorado Rapids announced that due to difficulty getting a work permit, “Omar Cummings’ training stint with English Premier League club Aston Villa has come to an end.”
The 28-year old Jamaican is a favorite among the fans, and is loved for his Ronaldinho-like agility and powerful striking ability. Rapids’ supporters had mixed emotions when Cummings was invited in December to train with Aston Villa during the offseason. Fans were both proud and happy for the forward, yet nervous they might lose their unofficial designated player in a trade.
For now, Rapids’ enthusiasts can get their Jamaican flags back out and look forward to Cummings finding his way back to the Rocky Mountains this month. They can cheer him on for at least one more year as he continues to bleed burgundy.

Good money would mean a good offer. Will one be made for him?

His agent should be looking towards countries like Germany, Belgium and Holland, where they don't have the kind of foreigner restrictions that they do in the UK.

His age is one thing that isn't helping him out much, however.
