  • Karlsruhe Wins The Great German Beer Bash - Barely

    Daniel Gordon's Karlsruhe won their big battle at first place Osnabruck 3-2, in a bizarre match. With a one-man advantage, Karlsruhe almost blew a 3-0 lead in the second half.

    After an scoreless first 25 minutes, Osnabruck's goalkeeper was sent off for a deliberate foul outside the box.

    Osnabruck could not clear the ensuing free kick, and the ball fell to Daniel Gordon. He took a shot, which struck an Osnabruck defender on the arm. Karlsruhe recieved a penalty kick.

    The penalty was converted , and during an argument on the sideline, Osnabruck's coach was ejected.

    Karlsruhe scored again three minutes later, and fans threw snowballs at the celebrating Karlsruhe players. A linesman was also reportedly struck by a snowball. The referee suspended the match for 15 minutes.

    Early in the second half, with a one-man advantage, Karlsruhe scored for a 3-0 lead. They were looking good, and Osnabruck's supporters were out of the game.

    Karlsruhe then got greedy and pushed forward, leaving themselves open for counter attacks. Osnabruck got one goal back on a counter attack and then completely dominated play for the final 20 minutes. Osnabruck scored in the 82nd minute on a direct free kick. Karlsruhe goalie Dirk Orlishausen had to make two spectacular saves in the final seconds to preserve the victory.

    KC people- no fair rooting for Osnabruck because they wear purple!

        Yes,that's right....snowballs. Apparently the "volunteers" did not do a good job clearing the stands of snow. After Karlsruhe scored their second goal, the fans threw snowballs at the players and the linesman at that end of the field. The referee had to stop the game for 15 minutes.
