Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says Pepe Reina's flirtation with Barcelona earlier this year ultimately cost him his status as Anfield No 1.
The Spanish keeper, who has joined Napoli on a season-long loan, had been expected to return to the Camp Nou.
Reina's agent had told Liverpool to expect a bid which would prompt his departure but Victor Valdes' U-turn over his future meant Barca never followed up their initial interest.
On his way: Pepe Reina has joined former manger Rafa Benitez for a season-long loan at Napoli
Big step: Simon Mignolet, training in Bangkok, will be Liverpool's first-choice keeper next season
By then Rodgers had already secured the services of £9million Simon Mignolet from Sunderland, meaning the writing was on the wall for Reina.
'In terms of us as a football club, it was obviously a difficult decision but it's one from last season,' he said.
'As manager I was led to believe we were going to get an offer for Pepe Reina that would probably see him leave the club.
'Obviously, on the football side we had to ensure we protected the team. At that stage we started our search for another goalkeeper and we found Simon Mignolet, who is top class and one of the best goalkeepers in Europe.

'As events transpired, Pepe's move didn't quite happen and that left us with two very good goalkeepers. Both would have been fighting for the No 1 position.
'An opportunity then arose for Pepe that we felt as a football club was probably best for him.
'As a senior keeper he needs to be playing. This is an important year for him this year with the World Cup next summer.
'It wouldn't have served any purpose for either the football club or him personally if he was the one missing out.
'He has decided to go to Napoli but we still have two very good goalkeepers still here at the club in Simon and Brad Jones. We will review the situation with Pepe when his loan has finished.'
Fell through: Barcelona stopper Victor Valdes decided to go back on his plans to leave the Nou Camp
Stalwart: Reina has been Liverpool's first-choice stopper since arriving from Villarreal in 2005

Exit? According to a report in The Sun, Liverpool owner John Henry is ready to sell Liverpool
Cut their losses: Investors are said to be furious at the money wasted during their three-year tenure
Cutting their losses: Andy Carroll was sold at a huge loss to West Ham
Coincidence? The fact Luis Suarez is for sale is a statement of intent, according to one source
Happier times: Liverpool have hardly progressed in three years of ownership under Fenway Sports Group
Talk 'bout "pot" and "kettle"...what do you propose to do X? Change the ownership? Explain how we as fans can go about that...
Don't damage your brain too much now...but come with a solution or else all you will be guilty of is demagoguery. The only thing that we can do is support the team and the manager...wishing for a Sheik is your prerogative, but as I have said before, Liverpool's current woes started when Moores and Rick "Coco the Clown" Parry sold the club to H&G instead of DIC. Very simple. Blaming BR for the club's situation is ridiculous. And no credit for a great little signing like Coutinho who scored a BEAUTY this morning.
