  • X? -- Stevie G's testimonial!

    Liverpool 2 Olympiacos 0

They rose to applaud him and chanted his name, eager to express their gratitude for what have been 15 remarkable years.
This might have been the latest exercise in Liverpool’s preparations for the new Barclays Premier League season but, in reality, it was all about one man; Steven Gerrard’s testimonial was always going to be a special occasion and the thunderous applause he received when marching out on to the scene of so many famous triumphs was befitting of his standing.

He had confessed before this game with Olympiakos to feeling uncomfortable about being the centre of attention, that the result for him was all important. So in that respect, the comfortable 2-0 victory over the Greek champions will have made his day.

Goals either side of half-time from Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson did not reflect the level of Liverpool’s superiority but, after five consecutive victories without a goal conceded, there was no reason to quibble. This is pre-season campaign that has gone smoothly for Rodgers.

But Gerrard was not the only figure who Anfield wanted to see and on 60 minutes, a capacity 44,362 crowd gave Luis Suarez an ovation that was there way of telling him to stay. Any thoughts that his summer of flirting with Arsenal and Real Madrid would leave a bad taste were banished in a flash.

There may be uncertainty about whether Suarez will submit a written transfer request or seek governing bodies to intervene in his contract wrangle but what is absolutely certain is the feeling Liverpool supporters have for Suarez the player.

They know those with his special qualities – like Gerrard – do not come around every year and if Liverpool are to make a decent fist of pushing for the Champions League this season, retaining Suarez’s services are imperative.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

He's talking about Gerrard. He is convinced that Gerrard and Carragher forced his beloved Rafa Benitez out of the club. The truth is that Rafa's demise was a confluence of unfortunate events, some of his own making:

        1. Rafa messed up losing Alonso - he flirted with Gareth Barry undermining the future world cup winner's confidence and trust.
        2. G+H didn't have the money to fund Rafa's spending needs - or appetite. Much has been made of Rafa's spending spree, but on a "net spending" basis, Rafa did pretty well. I don't know the number off hand, but it was under the £60m mark (I believe).
        3. Rafa signed a number of high profile flops - Robbie Keane, Milan Jovanic, Aquilani, Degen, Dossena - however, in fairness, he has to be given credit for Kuyt, Mascherano, Torres, Alonso, Reina, Agger, etc. But of course, the flops will always haunt a manager unless he is winning.

All that said - Rafa's biggest mistake was promising a top 4 finish in 2009-10 and then finishing 7th. A serious footnote to this underperforming year (that most fans simply don't factor in to the equation when measuring the abilities of a manager) was the state of the club's ownership. G+H did more damage in the 5 years they owned the club than an axe murder could have done to a tentful of bound and gagged teenagers. Rafa was their fall guy for sure...just like Brendan Rodgers is X's fall guy for all that currently ails Liverpool. Both are unfair.
