I have to wonder if this is not the media giving trouble. Maybe Ancelotti was referring to his characteristics, which he thought would be a better fit for the team. Which wouldn't be the first in his coaching career he has done something like that

Characteristics is a subset and not as bad as character, but still bad as it is alluding to a set of characteristics necessary to play ball and to contribute to team so it starts pushing more towards the overarching implication of character which is literally an indictment of the spirit of the person. The man mean spirited to throw that down in public like that, that is thick curry gravy on top of trading the man. Nasty business.
