  • Young Boyz fall short

The dream is over. A Caribbean team will journey to South Korea this summer to contest the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, but it will not be Jamaica.

Jamaica's young Reggae Boyz saw their chances of securing a place in this summer's Fifa Under-17 Youth World Cup in South Korea slip away following a 1-0 loss to Trinidad and Tobago at the National Stadium last night.

The disappointment prompted the coach of the Jamaica team, David Hunt, to resign with immediate effect. He announced his decision at the post-game press conference.

The Trinidadians finished in third place on six points behind the United States, who finished with nine and second-place Costa Rica who have seven.

Going into the game tied on three points along with the Trinidadians, the Reggae Boyz needed an outright win to progress, as neighbours Trinidad and Tobago having beaten Canada, would have advanced with any other result based on the tournament's head-to-head rule.

Jamaica lost their first two games but got themselves back into contention with a hard-fought 3-2 win over the United States on Friday.

They started brightly enough last night, dominating possesion and both strikers Dever Orgill and McKauly Tulloch both missed early oppourtunites.

Jamaica would be made to rue their missed chances soon after as right back Kevin Molino drifted off the right flank, drilled between both centre halves and blasted past Jamaica keeper Oneil Wilson from a tight angle in the 13th minute.

The Reggae Boyz continued to dominate and Orgill did find the back of the net in the 65th minute but had the finish ruled offside.

Minutes after coming on Christopher Waugh broke through on goal but saw a weak header gobbled up by Trinidad custodian Jesse Fullerton as the Soca Warriors defended stoutly.

The Trinidadians also got off to a poor start when they lost their first two games without scoring a single goal. The Soca Warriors, however, managed to turn things around when they beat Canada in their third game and then went on to secure their place with last night's win over the Jamaicans.

Trinidad, Costa Rica and the United States will join Haiti as regional qualifiers for the Youth World Cup. Haiti and Honduras qualified from four-team Group A, which also included El Salvador and 2005 world champions Mexico.
The 2007 Under-17 Youth World Cup, which will feature the world's top 24 teams, will be held from August 18 to September 9.

      Re: Young Boyz fall short

Perhaps, it slipped our JFF leaders that you must prepare sensibly, diligently and with meticulous care to win at the higher CONCACAF and World levels?

Perhaps, the ease and frequency with which Jamaica has qualified from the CFU region in THE PAST has had our JFF administrators trapped in a time-warp? The have probably failed to notice that it is becoming increasingly more difficult to top the CFU region in any level of men football?

The ladies are currently having it easy to 'stroll' through the CFU...but, as sure as the Sun rises in the East, that too shall change.

It has been looking us in the face for, as far as seeing trends in business goes, a long time.

The RBSC in its editorial of Tuesday, February 29, 2000 warned of this -

      Jamaican Football.....after Simoes!

The JFF has become complacent. FIFA has taught all national associations by FIFA's own example that planning for a World Cup campaign begins at least eight years before the event. Jamaica had become the envy of the Caribbean and indeed of all the countries that comprise the Football Federation (the former Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Football Associations). All these countries to some degree adopted the 'Jamaican Plan' and with a vengeance are working assiduously to fulfill their dream of reaching the World Cup Final competition in 2002. The JFF fell asleep.
Well we have still not awaken. Preparations of our national teams are not continuous. Preparations of our national teams are not approached with due care. We reap the rewards of our brand of haphazard stop-start-stop-start nonsense approach!

Are we doomed to such offhanded ineffective failed leadership for even another year?

Needed leadership to lead us to the TOP OF THE WORLD!

If the JFF leaders have failed to see it - The TOP OF THE WORLD is ruled by Brazil, Argentina, Germany and others of thier elk. Leadership that moves us towards and to eventual join that elite group needed - badly!
