Barcelona Tell United: £40m For Eto'o

Barcelona have reportedly told Manchester United that they will have to cough up 60 million euros if they want to land Samuel Eto'o.

The report, carried in the Independent, claims that the approach was made last month by United's chief executive David Gill, which is when they were told about the £40million price tag.

The Red Devils have not given up hope of landing the Cameroon international, but they have made clear that they will not beet Barcelona's asking price.

Eto'o himself seems to be uncertain over his future at the moment, not very keen to leave, and yet, not completely convinced he should stay after the public spat with Ronaldinho and Rijkaard.

The head-strong Cameroon international has also sacked his agent, and will carry out negotiations himself, thus delaying any real discussion until the end of the season.

However, Barcelona's recent links with Thierry Henry suggest that even they could be having second thoughts about a talented striker who can have a disruptive influence. Many at the Camp Nou blame his public outburst against Rijkaard and Ronaldinho for the team's Champions League exit at the hands of Liverpool.

Coming as it did just days befor the first leg, Barcelona never quite recovered from it, and crashed to an unexpected 2-1 home defeat (their first in Europe under Rijkaard), and crashed out despite winning at Anfield.
Milan are also chasing Eto'o according to reports emanating from Italy. However, the Rossoneri interest in Ronaldinho creates a problem, as the Catalans seem unwilling to lose both Eto'o and Ronaldinho together.

It is understood that Sir Alex is ready to splash the cash to land a top striker, and will swoop for Michael Owen or Dimitar Berbatov should the Eto'o move fail to go through. Chelsea are also looking on with interest.

United must offer £40m to secure Eto'o, say Barcelona

    By Jason Burt

After four months out, Eto'o has returned to score 10 goals in his last 14 appearances for Barca

Manchester United have inquired about the availability of Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o - but have been put off by the £40m transfer fee they were quoted.

The approach was made last month by United's chief executive David Gill and although the newly crowned Premiership champions have not given up hope of landing the Cameroonian striker, they have made clear they will not pay what Barcelona want.

Any deal would be fraught with difficulties not least because Eto'o is unsure whether he really wants to leave Barça and come to the Premiership. An added complication is that the 26-year-old is understood to have recently sacked his long-standing lawyer, Jose Maria Mesalles, who also acts as his agent, and is himself conducting negotiations over his future.

Eto'o is also a headstrong character who can quickly change his mind. Last February he fell out with Barça coach Frank Rijkaard - and with Ronaldinho - after he was accused of not wanting to play. It was assumed that the latter two would leave the Nou Camp before him but Eto'o made clear he wanted to go. A problem for Barça is that they don't want to lose both him and Ronaldinho - who has been attracting interest from Milan and is expected to leave Spain after a disappointing season.

However, Milan are also interested in Eto'o with sources claiming they would prefer to sign the three-time African Player of the Year if he was available. Again, however, they would not want to pay the price Barça are currently demanding even if, as the Catalan club have pointed out in negotiations, they are already asking for much less than the £75m buy-out clause in his contract. However, Barça are also aware that with just two years left on that contract, and no sign that Eto'o wants to agree a new deal - although that can change from day to day - they are in danger of losing a lot of money if he stays.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has made an imposing striker a priority in the transfer market. The club has explored the possibility of signing Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham, and they are also eager to take advantage of the clause in Michael Owen's contract that means he can leave Newcastle United for just £9m - far less than the £16m it cost to take him to St James' Park two years ago.

Ferguson has been interested in Eto'o for some time and it would be a real coup if he could land the player especially as he was, last summer, Chelsea's main transfer target before they decided to sign Andrei Shevchenko. Eto'o has also interested Arsenal, who are desperate to acquire a leading striker, although manager Arsène Wenger is aware that he may not have the funds to compete.

Eto'o has missed four months of what has been a topsy-turvy season for Barça, although they still head La Liga, but has returned to score 10 goals in his last 14 appearances to confirm his return to fitness. United have also made clear that they are only interested in a cash deal and will not include Cristiano Ronaldo in any move.
