ManUre is a publicly listed company and Chelsea is privately held, with Abromovich having the right to make the final call on the business of Chelsea where he is the owner. Two different business set up totally.

The Board of ManUre have responsibility to protect the interest of the shareholders. They also have the authority to make the final decision on matters to protect the interest of the shareholders. The Board therefore have to take responsibility for the decision to hire Moyes and not pawn that off to Fergie.

Actually Tilla, the Board is not an operational unit of a business, it is an oversight entity and only can operate within the confines of that company's bylaws. Unless some special committee were set up, it is rare that they would be involved in the selection of an employee other than the CEO. It is the CEO's job to put in place an operational structure that involves effective human resource management including hiring and firing. That includes delegation of authority based on an individual's role or skill set. It is entirely reasonable for an outgoing senior executive to be tasked with hiring his replacement. The Board would get involved in approving compensation and other terms to ensure these were congruent with the company's bylaws. Said another way - AH FERGIE DWEET!!! He was probably drinking a second bottle of bubbly on the night, but hey, who am I to criticize his methods?
