VILLARREAL, Spain -- Barcelona defender Dani Alves responded to a racist taunt Sunday in his side's 3-2 win at Villarreal by picking up a banana that landed at his feet, peeling and then eating it before proceeding to take a corner kick.

This gesture should make everybody feel very good about themselves. FIFA, the fans, the media etc. Afterall the player didnt do something stupid like walking off the field etc. Carry on FIFA, UEFA let's get on with the game. That's the way to deal with European racism. Poor Danny Alves must be tired of telling them "I'm not black, I'm Mestizo it says so on my Brazillian census".

The stars suporting Alves' action, including one Luis Suarez! I love it!

Fifa president Sepp Blatter tweeted: "What Alves tolerated is an outrage. Will be zero tolerance at #WorldCup."
FIFA come een like di Jamaican police - di two a dem have no idea of what "zero tolerance" means! Waiting to see what punishment is meted out to Villareal!

"Thanks to the security forces and the invaluable assistance of the Villarreal fans, the club have identified the culprit and decided to withdraw their season ticket and ban them from entering El Madrigal stadium for life."
Not sure this is good enough! So, if you have 20,000 season ticket holders who choose to do this one at a time, you will allow this to happen 19,999 more times before you get rid of all of them?!?!

Sepp Blather is kidding whom? So why just at WC? How about in any FIFA related/sanctioned match or competition or league, any time, any day, anywhere...

Who else are they supposed to ban then?

The Spanish league also has to do its part by hitting the club with a punishment. Just a few months ago they fined them when a fan threw a smoke bomb on the field, although it was only for a measly €4,000. Let's see what they decide to do this time.

When the club is hit with with a heavy fine or some other punishment, the club may find it necessary to make it clear that such behaviour is not acceptable. Can't just leave it up to individuals.

Dani Alves says banana thrower should be publicly shamed

Barcelona defender Dani Alves says the fan who threw a banana at him during Sunday's dramatic 3-2 win at Villarreal should be publicly shamed.

Alves responded by peeling it and taking a bite before taking the corner, a gesture that drew praise from the world of football. Villarreal said on Monday they had given the fan responsible a life ban.
