  • The US is the second-largest market for tickets to the WCup

The World Cup is just days away, and Americans have finally caught the fever.

The United States is the second-largest market for tickets to the upcoming soccer tournament in Brazil, according to data from viagogo, the global market for ticket resales.

That's a major shift from four years ago, when the World Cup was held in South Africa. Then, the United States didn't even rank among the top 10 countries buying tickets, says Oliver Wheeler, a spokesman for viagogo.

"This reflects the growing popularity of soccer in the U.S. and the close proximity of this year's World Cup," says Wheeler.

Agreed, but it is worse as this data is horsesh!t. America was the number one buyer of world cup tickets for South Africa. The article also says it is based on sales on viagogo which is a flawed number as it is only one slice of the pie. Here's what the Washington Post said in June 2010:

As the sport's quadrennial spectacle, the World Cup, unfolds over the next month, starting Friday with the South Africa-Mexico match in Johannesburg, the largest number of ticket holders will come not from traditional soccer strongholds like England, Brazil or Germany but the United States. According to the South African organizing committee and FIFA, soccer's international governing body, more than 130,000 of the 2.8 million tickets were purchased by U.S. residents, the highest total by any country other than South Africa

Still shows a big marketplace for soccer in America.
