  • 2152: GOAL England - Brazil

2108: Great save from Tottenham's Paul Robinson. The keeper dives low to his right the prevent Ronaldinho's deflcted shot, taken with the outside of the foot, creeping in. The giant Naldo heads two feet wide from the resulting corner.

2106: The sound has dropped noticeably at the start of the half - fans are slowly making it back from the food kiosks and toilets. To be fair to they they will need England to deliver something a little bit more entertaining over the next 45 minutes for the decibels to rise.

2104: England kick off the second half. Neither side have made any changes. Hang on! This is a friendly isn't it?

2054: "Upon arriving at Wembley, it's easy to spot similarities between the new stadium and the Emirates. Watching Brazil is a little like watching Arsenal at times, they always seem to want to play another pass and they steadfastly refuse to cross the ball. It's an absolute pleasure to behold."
Jonathan Stevenson, BBC Sport at Wembley

2053: "Steven Gerrard has been a pick of the England players, playing in front of the back four. He made two crucial tackles. It's been a friendly international, with a strong emphasis on the world 'friendly'."
Former England striker Alan Shearer on Match of the Day

2048: HALF-TIME - It is staggering to see England look so static compared to the Brazilians. After watching the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal play some sumptuous football this season - good movement, slick passing - it must be depressing for England fans to see their team play with a lack of imagination.

2042: Vagner Love closes down keeper Paul Robinson who is given a tricky backpass to deal with by Nick Shorey. Vagner Love manages to get a foot on the ball but it ricochets harmlessly wide for England. Interesting fact - The striker reportedly got his last name from Palmeiras team-mates after being caught in his hotel room with female company.

2037: Quality stuff from the Barcelona maestro Ronaldinho. He nutmegs Gerrard before feeding in Vagner Love. The CSKA Moscow forward is fouled at the edge of the area. Again the crowd wait to see if the first goal comes from a set-piece as Ronaldinho steps up. But the Barca magician bends his effort just wide of Paul Robinson's goal.

2036: "Half of Wembley thought that was in. The other half presumably just laughed at them. It really is a game of two halves."
Jonathan Stevenson, BBC Sport at Wembley

2032: Steven Gerrard makes his own charge, Gerrard-style, up the other end and is brought down 20 yards from goal. Step up David Beckham. The crowd wait in and anticipation and expectation, but the LA-bound midfielder misses Helton's right-hand upright by a couple of feet.

2031: AC Milan's Kaka, who had a superb season with the Italian giants, jinks past a couple of player before Steven Gerrard makes a sensational tackle on the forward.

2028: The sun sets on Wembley. Lovely.

2027: "The England fans to our right have spotted a couple of fans with Brazil shirts on in the home end and they give them some good-natured banter. Hopefully it was good natured, don't need no trouble tonight folks." Andrew McKenzie, BBC Sport at Wembley

2026: "The first Mexican wave has started already. I cannot think that's a good thing."
Jonathan Stevenson, BBC Sport at Wembley

2023: Arsenal's Gilberto Silva is flagged offside after nodding the ball into the net from eight yards. The TV replays show it was Brazil team-mate Vagner Love who was in an offside position.

2021: Joe Cole tries his luck from 25 yards, but it was really a half chance that took one bounce before reaching the arms of keeper Helton.

2018: Joe Cole looks like England's most potent weapon. But he needs better support from the quiet Frank Lampard and industrious Steven Gerrard.

2016: Robinho, switching to the left, performs some fancy-dan lollipops in front of Jamie Carragher before screwing his shot horribly wide.

2014: Beckham gives one reason why he has been included in the England line-up. The Real Madrid star dinks the ball from 25 yards into 18-yard box that striker Michael Owen just fails to connect with.

2012: Brazil look great in attack. Robinho, Kaka and Ronaldinho are really testing England's backline. Kaka's flicks are sublime.

2010: Brazil's tallest-ever international is playing in defence - Naldo. All 6ft 5ins of him. He is tall, but not as tall as England's Peter Crouch (6ft 7ins) who I'm sure will get on the end of Beckham's crosses... that's if he gets on the pitch.

2009: "Being stuck in an office full of Brazilians, I can't decide whether not being able to watch the game here is a good or a bad thing. I think I'll keep the 'Come on England's' to a minimum to avoid being fired/laughed at when Kaka et al destroy us. God save the Queen and all that."
Seb Goldsmith in Sao Paolo via e-mail

2006: England keeper Paul Robinson punches away Ronaldinho's vicious free-kick from the right.

2003: The first senior England international to be played at the new Wembley kicks off.

2002: There is a minute's round of applause for England legend Alan Ball, who died in April.

"There are 90,000 guests at Nicky Shorey's stag party."
Analyst Graham Taylor on BBC Five Live. Taylor was referring to Shorey's wedding, that takes place tomorrow.

1959: It will be interesting to see whether the partnership between Alan Smith and the returning Michael Owen works.

1953: "Some last-minute repairs are being carried out on that Wembley pitch. The England team obviously didn't replace their divots. Shame on you boys - no etiquette."
Andrew McKenzie, BBC Sport at Wembley

1950: "Kaka has grown in stature. He's better than ever before."
Former Brazil player Leonardo on BBC's Match of the Day

1945: "I hope they play Bentley in the second half."
    retroxretro on the 606 messageboards

1937: "The pitch where England are practicising is really starting to cut up as the home side run through their drills. Maybe it is a tactic to disturb Brazil's flowing football."
Andrew McKenzie, BBC Sport at Wembley

1936: "They might have enjoyed being on the road the last seven years, but boy do the England fans seem happy to be back home tonight. The atmosphere is electric, everyone's wearing white and the first announcement of the team just got a rapturous reception - the biggest roar, perhaps, saved for a certain David Robert Joseph Beckham."
Jonathan Stevenson, BBC Sport at Wembley

1934: "There is no-one performing on the right-hand side like Beckham used to for England."
Former England striker Alan Shearer on Match of the Day

1932: "The teams have been warming up on the pitch. Plenty of stretching and short sprints for the England players, some more laidback passing and moving by the boys from Brazil."
Andrew McKenzie, BBC Sport at Wembley

1930: "People forget about Beckham's footballing ability because of the circus that follows him. The simple fact is he one most talented and hard working players our country has ever produced. Good luck David, good luck England."
David Woodruff, an Englishman stuck at work in the US, via e-mail.

TEAM NEWS: Here's the Brazil team hot off the press - Helton, Daniel Alves, Naldo, Juan, Mineiro, Gilberto, Ronaldinho, Gilberto Silva, Vagner Love, Kaka, Robinho.

1925: "I expect David Beckham to play the way he knows how to play. He can provide so much - he's looked good in training.

"I've picked Lampard and Gerrard to play together again because they've only been in one losing side when they've been paired with each other. Smith is partnering Owen because he provides that extra midfielder - and we'll need that against the Brazilians."
England coach Steve McClaren on Match of the Day

1915: "It's like deja vu watching England. It's the same team I've seen before. Where are the youngsters?"
Analyst Terry Butcher on BBC Five Live

1907: No real surprises. It will be interesting to see how Shorey manages - it won't be the easiest of debuts for Royals player.

And Beckham is back in England colours - 335 days after winning his last cap.

"My feeling is that any England manager must do what they think is right. Even if coach Steve McClaren thinks he should just include Beckham for Brazil and Estonia then so be it."
Analyst Graham Taylor on BBC Five Live

"The fact they've included Beckham is just a joke."
Commentator Alan Green on BBC Five Live.

TEAM NEWS: Here England's starting line-up - Paul Robinson, Jamie Carragher, Ledley King, John Terry, Nicky Shorey, David Beckham, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Joe Cole, Alan Smith and Michael Owen.

1900: So this is it. A historic occasion. One that will live in the memory of all those who have turned up at the New Wembley. That's right, Reading's Nicky Shorey is set to make his England bow.

There is also the small matter of the senior England team playing at this £757m venue for the first time since it opened its many doors three months ago.

And look at who England's finest are playing? Only the mighty Brazil.

Two of the biggest threats in world football are set to start for the men from South America - Barcelona's Ronaldinho and AC Milan's Kaka.

But Brazil coach Dunga is also likely to give some unfamilar faces a run out, such as CSKA Moscow duo Vagner Love and Jo, Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Elano and Porto goalkeeper Helton.

Who will come out on top? My money's on Brazil.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

    2152: GOAL England 1-1 Brazil
Diego snatches a late equaliser for Brazil. The Werder Bremen midfielder scores in the 92nd minute with almost the last touch of the game, by heading in ball from the left. Brazil did not have many efforts on target but probably just about deserved the equaliser.

2149: Steven Gerrard is announced as the Man of the Match - deservedly so for taming Brazil's attacking players. But surely England fans would rather see Liverpool's finest play further up.

2148: Kieron Dyer's low ball from the right is cut out before reaching the big feet of Peter Crouch.

2146: Ronaldinho delivers a wicked free-kick that drops just inside the six-yard area. A difficult one for Paul Robinson to deal with but he just manages to punch the ball off a Brazil player and to safety.

2144: Diego's low shot from six yards is comfortably saved by England keeper Paul Robinson.

2142: Michael Owen, who has had little reward for a hard-working performance, is replaced by Peter Crouch. Crouch, 6ft 7ins, may now benefit from David Beckham's crosses. Oh no, he won't because Beckham has been substituted.

2139: Afonso Alves heads a yard over after Naldo nods on Ronaldinho's corner from the right. He should have scored.

2136: David Beckham is given a fantastic ovation from the crowd as he comes off for Tottenham's Jermaine Jenas. Beckham has virtually assured his place in Wednesday's line-up against Estonia, following a brilliant exhibition.

2133: Wes Brown comes close to a shocker, falling over at the edge of the area to allow substitute Afonso Alves surghe into the area. Fortunately for Brown, Paul Robinson is alert and makes Afonso fire his shot wide.

2132: Goalscorer John Terry who seemed to pick up an injury after scoring for England is replaced by Wes Brown. Jamie Carragher to centre-back with Brown taking the right-back slot.

2131: "What a delivery from Beckham. His performance so far has been a cut above any other England player. Does it make the decision to recall him look like a stroke of genius, or make the decision to leave him out in the first place look utterly ridiculous?"
Jonathan Stevenson, BBC Sport at Wembley

    2127: GOAL England 1-0 Brazil
Well done captain John Terry. The Chelsea defender leaps above 6ft 5ins Naldo at the far post to power in a header from David Beckham's free-kick from the right. He becomes the first senior England player to score a goal at the new Wembley. Not that you needed me to tell you that.

2126: Brazil's Maicon comes on for Daniel Alves.

2123: The substitutes have added some much needed vigour and bite to the England team. Middlesbrough's Stuart Downing, who scored twice for England 'B' last week, launches a stunning shot from 30 yards that Helton is forced to tip over.

2121: Michael Owen wins England a free-kick at the edge of the area. David Beckham fires his free-kick wide from 25 yards. Kieron Dyer and Stuart Downing come on for Joe Cole and Alan Smith. Brazil's Edmilson comes on for Mineiro.

2118: "Kieron Dyer and Stewart Downing are both going through their paces in front of us. Looks like it will not be that long before they come on."
Andrew McKenzie, BBC Sport at Wembley

2116: Michael Owen comes close to scoring his 37th England goal and his first since his injury at the last World Cup. The diminutive Newcastle striker leaps above the tall Brazil defence to float his header from Beckham's cross just a yard over the crossbar.

2113: "Not difficult to see why Naldo is winning headers easily in the England box. He once scored a hat-trick for his club Werder Bremen. Can anyone tell us if they all went in off his head?"
Jonathan Stevenson, BBC Sport at Wembley

2111: England win their first corner. But keeper Helton is equal to Beckham's in-swinger. Is Helton's surname John?

      Gerrard outshines showman Beckham

International football by Phil McNulty - BBC Sport 01 June 2007

David Beckham's sense of theatre ensured he inevitably took centre stage as England returned to Wembley with a draw against Brazil

The former captain delivered trademark crosses and free-kicks around the appalling Wembley turf - including the set-piece that looked like creating the winner for his successor as skipper John Terry.

He will play against Estonia on Wednesday - coach Steve McClaren has to select him having brought him out of international exile.

It would be churlish to say Beckham's performance at Wembley was anything other than exemplary, both in attitude and in delivery.

He was involved in many good things and deserved the warm ovation he was afforded when he was substituted.

But, as someone fiercely against his comeback, nothing happened at Wembley to change a strong conviction that the move was a desperate and unneccessary short-term measure.

Sorry if this does not strike the correct chord of rejoicing, but Beckham has no place in England's plans beyond next Wednesday.

True Beckham gives England an extra edge at free-kicks, but if McClaren feels he needs a set-piece specialist to beat the might of Estonia, then his regime is in bigger trouble than we thought.

As for McClaren's lauding of Beckham after the game - "best right-sided player in the world" no less - all admirable stuff, but it begged a question.

If Beckham is such a talisman and a talent, why make such a puffed-up public show of leaving him out in the first place?

Beckham did well against Brazil, but it was hardly a hugely competitive test and he should not be considered again after Estonia.

LA Galaxy is his future, not England.

McClaren will feel robbed of a morale-boosting win after Diego's header with only seconds left.

The last thing McClaren needs is to be an unlucky coach as well an an unimpressive one given the nature of his work since succeeding Sven-Goran Eriksson.

But there were some comforting signs for McClaren to clutch at.

There at least appeared to have been some attempt to finally address the balance of the midfield link between Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

Gerrard was England's best player in a holding midfield role, while Lampard was poor once more on the international stage as the attacking force.

The balance, at least, looked better, but this was more a tribute to Gerrard's brilliance and adaptability than signs of a genuine, workable partnership between the pair.

Once Owen Hargreaves is fit, it will be interesting to see what decision McClaren can bring himself to take.

He should drop Lampard, give Gerrard the attacking role, and use Hargreaves as the holder.

He should...but is probably hoping something will crop up to avoid him having to pass that acid test.

Alan Smith played himself out of a role in Estonia with a lifeless performance, while Michael Owen is still clearly playing himself into form and fitness.

If England had greater options, Owen would probably be continuing his rehabilitation after serious injury, but McClaren clearly feels the cupboard is bare.

He faces a dilemma in Estonia on whether to use Owen alone up front, or give him the support of Peter Crouch, because on this evidence Smith is a non-starter.

Beckham will play of course, and will take most of the plaudits - of course.

But not for the first time, Gerrard emerged as England's best player once the effect of the glitz and the flashlights had worn off.

        England return delights Beckham

        By Andrew McKenzie

        BBC Sport at Wembley Stadium

Beckham was given a great reception by the fans at Wembley

England midfielder David Beckham thanked the fans for helping to make his return from the international wilderness such a special one.

Beckham was given a standing ovation after a fine display in which he set up John Terry for their goal in the 1-1 friendly draw with Brazil at Wembley.

"It is always nice to have the support of the fans," said the former skipper.

"I'm not sure if I knew I'd ever get this moment again but I'm happy to be part of a historic night."

The Real Madrid star pulled on England shirt for the first time in 11 months and responded with a performance full of the passion that once made him his country's talisman.

During the final years of Sven-Goran Eriksson's reign as coach Beckham faced accusations that he was picked for the side irrespective of form.

They are a great bunch of lads, they are so free-spirited and I'm sure we'll be all right

        David Beckham

When Steve McClaren succeeded Eriksson as coach one of his first decisions was to leave Beckham out of the squad.

But after missing the first nine matches under McClaren the former Manchester United star was recalled for his 95th cap as England played their first senior game at the new Wembley.

Beckham dismissed suggestions that he took his place in the England squad for granted, adding: "I always felt I had to play for my place, not just this week.
"I always believed in whichever team I have been in, wherever I have been I have had to fight for my place and I've always done that for England.
"I felt relaxed all week and it is nice to be back with the team."

        AZ

His long-term international future is in some doubt with his impending move to the LA Galaxy.

But cap number 96 is sure to follow when England face Estonia in Tallinn on Wednesday in a crucial Euro 2008 qualifier.

And the 32-year-old is more interested in helping England to a much-needed victory than discussions about whether McClaren was right to leave him out of previous squads.
"I'm not looking at the past," he said. "The most important thing is the three points.

"They are a great bunch of lads, they are so free-spirited and I'm sure we'll be all right."

          To the Beckham doubters.....

International football | England by AllezZizou
          02 June 2007

I've got to say i'm pretty amused this morning, the same papers who called for Beckhams head now sing his praises and the same people who called for it, now hail him as a hero.

But the funniest thing of all is some people who criticized the decision to bring him back, are trying to now defend themselves and say he wasn't up to scratch last night.

          Get real.

Why don't you just admit you were wrong?

And that includes Terry Butcher. I'm no Beckham fanboy, but i was delighted he rammed Butchers words down his throat last night and well as those of any other doubters.

Butcher, like those other who doubted, should stand up and have the guts to publically admit they were wrong.

I've said all along that Beckham should never have been dropped. He was simply used as a scapegoat for England's shortcomings at last year's world cup. Doubters of Beck's talent obviously no nothing about the beautiful game and should keep their mouths shut. These idiots are eating very large portions of humble pie today.

For the record, Beckham doubters probably think that Frank Lampard is world class. Don't make me laugh, if anyone should have been made a scapegoat for last year's world cup it's this under achiever.

Good to have you back Becks and not only for your undisputed talent but for the feel good again factor. My hat is tipped for last night's performance. Bring on Estonia, bring on a galvonised England!! The phoenix has risen from the ashes.
