FRANKFURT, Germany — German authorities searched the premises of the country's soccer federation and the home of its president on Tuesday over payments made to FIFA in connection with the 2006 World Cup.

Frankfurt prosecutor Nadja Niesen said the raids were at the federation's headquarters and at three private premises. She said the prosecutors' office was investigating "tax evasion in a particularly serious case."

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

FIFA presidential candidate Tokyo Sexwale has claimed the organisation's sponsors are exerting too much power by calling for Sepp Blatter to quit immediately as president.

Four of FIFA's biggest sponsors -- Coca-Cola, Visa, Budweiser and McDonald's -- issued simultaneous statements last month calling for Blatter to go immediately after criminal proceedings were opened against him by the Swiss authorities.

Speaking to Reuters, Sheikh Ahmad, one of the key power brokers in international sport, defended the decision of the reform committee to turn down a proposal for term limits for members of world soccer's scandal-plagued governing body.
